Help us create a better future, quicker!
SP Energy Networks is at the heart of the UK’s journey to Net Zero. We keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses across Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and North Shropshire - and we are investing in the smarter, cleaner, more resilient network our customers and communities need for the future.
Artificial Intelligence will play an important role in how we plan, operate and transform our business. Used well, it can help us improve decision-making, strengthen productivity, support innovation and deliver better outcomes for customers. To do that safely and effectively, we need strong governance, clear portfolio visibility and joined-up coordination across SPEN, ScottishPower and the wider Iberdrola Group.
We are looking for an AI Strategy & Governance Manager to provide the local AI Delegate capability for SP Energy Networks. This is a new and important role for someone who can bring structure, pace and clarity to a fast-moving area — helping AI initiatives progress through the right governance routes, maintaining visibility of the AI portfolio and supporting responsible adoption across the organisation.
This is an opportunity to work at the centre of energy transition, digital transformation and responsible innovation. You will help SPEN adopt AI in a way that is practical, safe and aligned to the needs of our customers, communities and colleagues.
What you’ll be doing
This is a governance, coordination and portfolio visibility role. You will help create the conditions for responsible AI adoption by making sure the right information, assurance, decisions and governance records are in place.
The role does not own SPEN’s AI strategy, AI investment decisions or technical delivery. Instead, it provides the structure, challenge and coordination needed to support safe, transparent and well-governed AI adoption.
Other responsibilities include:
- Act as SPEN’s primary AI Delegate within the agreed AI governance framework
- Coordinate AI governance activity, including triage, assurance checkpoints, actions, decisions and escalations
- Maintain a consolidated view of the SPEN AI portfolio, including approved, inflight and proposed initiatives
- Support the maintenance and communication of the SPEN AI Strategic Roadmap
- Prepare clear portfolio updates, governance packs and decision materials for senior stakeholders
- Track risks, dependencies, milestones and decision points across the AI governance pipeline
- Coordinate inputs from business sponsors, delivery teams, data, cyber, architecture, PMO and Group AI stakeholders
- Translate complex AI, delivery and governance information into clear, practical language
What you’ll bring
- Strong experience in portfolio, programme, PMO or governance roles within a complex environment
- Confidence working with senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams
- Good AI literacy, including awareness of machine learning, generative AI, automation and common AI tools such as Copilot, Azure OpenAI or AWS
- Ability to manage multiple initiatives as a coherent portfolio and provide clear reporting on status, risk, dependencies and decisions
- Experience supporting governance forums, preparing decision materials and maintaining auditable records
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to turn complex information into concise, accessible messages
- Comfort operating in an evolving area where governance, technology and business needs are developing quickly
It is also advantageous if you have
- Experience in AI, data or digital delivery environments
- Experience working in a group, federated or highly governed operating model
- Understanding of regulatory, cyber, audit or assurance requirements
- Awareness of responsible and ethical AI principles
Minimum Criteria
- Experience in a portfolio, programme, PMO, governance or transformation rolewithin a complex organisation
- Experience supporting governance forums and decision-making processes, including preparing papers, tracking actions, risks and decisions, and maintaining governance records
- Experience producing portfolio, programme or performance reportingand presenting information clearly for senior stakeholders
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience working across multiple teams and translating complex information into practical and accessible messages
- Working knowledge of Artificial Intelligence concepts and technologies, including awareness of Generative AI, machine learning, automation or enterprise AI tools
