Forestry England is the country’s largest land manager, caring for the nation’s forests for people, nature and climate. They are looking for a motivated and capable Assistant Area Land Agent to join their Central District Estates Team and help manage a diverse and fascinating property portfolio spanning woodlands, farms, recreation sites, commercial properties and development opportunities


This is an exciting opportunity for a property professional who enjoys variety, autonomy and working across a wide range of estate management disciplines. You will work alongside experienced surveyors and land agents, supporting Forestry England’s operational and recreation teams while helping maximise the value and sustainability of their estate



About the role


As Assistant Area Land Agent, you will play a key role in managing landlord and tenant relationships across Forestry England’s Central District estate. You will negotiate and oversee a broad range of agreements covering commercial, agricultural, residential, recreational and sporting interests


You'll also provide professional property advice to colleagues, undertake valuation work, manage wayleaves and utility agreements, support development projects and help protect Forestry England’s property interests across a diverse landscape


There will also be opportunities to become involved in emerging areas such as Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and renewable energy projects, making this an excellent role for someone seeking career development and exposure to innovative land management initiatives



Key responsibilities


  • Manage landlord and tenant relationships across a mixed-use estate.
  • Negotiate new leases, lettings, rent reviews and lease renewals.
  • Support recreation and commercial teams with tenancy management and new opportunities.
  • Handle access rights, boundary matters, encroachments and third-party liability issues.
  • Manage wayleave agreements and liaise with utility companies and developers.
  • Provide professional advice on property matters to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Support major development and investment projects.
  • Undertake or assist with RICS Red Book valuations.
  • Contribute to property strategy and long-term asset management planning.



Essential requirements

  • Experience managing mixed-use property portfolios, including landlord and tenant matters.
  • Proven ability to negotiate agreements, rent reviews and lease renewals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-management abilities.
  • Experience working collaboratively within teams and with external consultants.
  • Ability to handle complex or sensitive situations with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS or AssocRICS), or demonstrable progress towards APC qualification with relevant experience.


Desirable

  • Experience undertaking or assisting with RICS Red Book valuations.
  • Registered Valuer status, or working towards registration.

Location and travel
