This is a site-based position offered on a 21-month fixed-term contract and would suit an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor with at least one year's construction industry experience who is looking to gain greater responsibility and hands-on commercial experience on a substantial live project. The Role Working as part of the project commercial team and reporting to the Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Director, you will assist with the financial and contractual management of the project throughout its delivery. Your responsibilities will include supporting the procurement of subcontractors, suppliers and materials, obtaining and comparing quotations and assisting with the preparation and maintenance of procurement schedules. You will review construction drawings, specifications and project information, undertake measurements and material take-offs and assist with the preparation of cost estimates and procurement information. The position will involve supporting the management of subcontractor accounts, reviewing applications for payment and assisting with valuations, payment notices and the measurement of completed works on site. You will monitor project expenditure against agreed budgets and assist with the identification, recording and commercial management of variations, change orders and additional works. Working alongside the Quantity Surveyor, you will also assist with monthly Cost Value Reconciliation reports, project forecasts, cost reporting and the identification of potential commercial risks. As the project progresses, you will gain further exposure to subcontractor final accounts and construction contracts, including JCT, while developing your understanding of contractual notices, payment provisions, variations, extensions of time and loss and expense. Being based on site, you will work closely with the Quantity Surveying, Project Management and operational teams and attend project meetings as required. Candidates will ideally hold an HNC, HND or degree in Quantity Surveying or another construction-related discipline, although relevant industry experience will also be considered. You should have at least one year's previous experience working for a construction company, ideally within an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor or similar commercial position. Previous experience working on a live construction site would be particularly advantageous. You should have a good understanding of construction drawings, specifications and project documentation, together with an understanding of construction procurement and subcontractor management. Some knowledge of construction contracts, preferably JCT, would also be beneficial. Applicants should have strong numerical and analytical skills, excellent attention to detail and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. You will need to be organised, reliable and commercially minded, with the ability to manage competing priorities within a busy project environment. Good communication skills are essential, as you will be working closely with commercial colleagues, Project Managers, site teams, subcontractors and suppliers. A full UK driving licence is required.
