We are seeking a dedicated Senior Dental Officer with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to join our team and provide Special Care Dentistry services in a beautiful rural location in Ceredigion, West Wales.

You will provide a range of Dental services in accordance with approved Health board plans and policies. You will be required to assist with the training and development of community dentists, dentists with enhanced skills in special care dentistry and professions complimentary to dentistry.

Main duties of the job

The Hywel Dda Community Dental Service (CDS) is dedicated to providing dental care for vulnerable adults and children who may have difficulties in seeking and receiving dental treatment throughout the Ceredigion . Our clinics are different to high street dental practices in that we see patients on a referral basis only, which ensures that they receive their treatment from the most appropriately trained member of the team and in the best clinic to suit their needs. The Senior Dental Officer will be supported by the Clinical Lead and the Community Team.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.

Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire.

Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings.

47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers.

Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services.

Job responsibilities

The role will be based in North Road Clinic, Aberystwyth but there is currently a need to cover some clinics at Cardigan Integrated Care Centre as well. Delivery of intravenous and inhalation sedation services General and Specialist DGH and Community-based outpatient clinics Effective leadership of multidisciplinary staff members within the unit Development of teaching, training and research within the Organisation

Person specification

Qualifcations

Essential

  • -Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent
  • -Current General Dental Council registration certificate
  • -Current Performers number, VT number or completion of competency Equivalence scheme and therefore eligible for immediate inclusion on to Performer list

Desirable

  • -Appropriate post-graduate qualification to specialist field. Inclusion on Specialist list
  • -Sedation experience/SAAD accreditation

Abilities and Skills

Essential

  • -Good communication skills - interpersonal, written and verbal
  • -Ability to organise self, clinic and respond to time pressures
  • -Basic IT skills

Desirable

  • -Ability to use a clinical computer system

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • -Experienced in a wide range of general and/or community dentistry
  • -Minimum 5 years postgraduate experience
  • -Experience in Special Care dentistry and paediatric dentistry in the previous two years
