Job Overview

CDM Principal Designer Job in Edinburgh with a multi-studio UK construction and design practice delivering Principal Designer services across diverse sectors. This hybrid role suits a construction or design professional with at least 3 years' post-qualified experience and proven knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015. Based in Edinburgh with initial office integration, you will lead CDM compliance across complex projects, mentor teams and embed best practice in health and safety. This is a dedicated CDM and Health & Safety position, not a design leadership role, reporting to the Senior Management Team.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Deliver Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015
  • Manage compliance across multiple live projects
  • Advise designers on statutory CDM responsibilities
  • Prepare fee proposals and project activity schedules
  • Report to Senior Management on CDM performance

You will coordinate CDM services across the wider team, contribute to internal guidance documents and deliver CPD sessions on health, safety, wellbeing and inclusion. Collaboration with BIM teams will ensure effective integration of risk management throughout RIBA Stages.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Minimum 3 years construction industry experience
  • Background in architecture or construction disciplines
  • Proven CDM Principal Designer experience
  • Strong knowledge of UK Health and Safety law
  • Confident communicator and mentor

Project management experience within residential, commercial or mixed-use sectors is advantageous. APS, IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications are desirable; support is available to achieve certification. A disciplined, organised approach and confidence working autonomously are essential.

Salary & Benefits

£35,000 - £45,000 depending on experience.

  • 23 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Christmas shutdown included
  • 3% employer pension contribution
  • Hybrid working after probation
  • Structured CPD and qualification support

Additional benefits include employee counselling support, regular social events and matched charitable funding. Hybrid working typically operates on a 50/50 basis following probation.
