Job Summary

Job Title: Certification Specialist. Delivers product certification programs requiring interpretation of standards, processes and procedures. Makes technical decisions based on a high degree of knowledge, training and professional experience to maintain the integrity of CSA’s global certification programs. Provides technical support, staff training, and participation in assigned Standard committees. Acts as backup for management of activities such as technical support, staff training, participation in standard committees, and answering technical questions.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Efficiently manages certification projects concurrently, ensuring completion within time frames and cost deadlines to generate specified revenue targets.
  • Evaluates products against requirements of national and international standards and precedent decisions.
  • Handles a wide spectrum of projects, including complex high-revenue ones, while maintaining high productivity and on-time, on-budget performance.
  • Actively looks for efficiencies and demonstrates changes that deliver productivity gains year on year.
  • Identifies and secures approval for new or improved evaluation processes, standards interpretations, and forms and templates.
  • Identifies and secures approval for new or improved test facilities, laboratory equipment, and procedures.
  • Reviews test data and reports and authorizes application of CSA Mark.
  • Prepares and signs certification reports and certificates of compliance.
  • Participates in CSA Technical Network and Technical Panels, supports international standards development.
  • Serves as a technical authority inside CSA and across industry through committee participation, authoring technical papers, and representing CSA at public functions.
  • Provides formal internal and external technical presentations and supports team in audit processes.
  • Conducts manufacturer’s facility assessment for CPC and SMT/SMTC programs.
  • Conducts construction evaluation, ensuring unit compliance with construction section of the standard.
  • Collaborates with Lab Technician to create work orders detailing required tests, order of tests, and number of samples.
  • Evaluates products at customer facility, witnesses customer tests, and reviews customer test methods.
  • Ensures all test equipment and quality procedures meet guidelines, and provides technical briefing on existing requirements.
  • Answers inquiries regarding standards and legal requirements, evaluates and qualifies companies in administration of CSA Category Certification Program and CSA Shared Program.
  • Provides training and technical briefings on new and existing requirements, authorizes application or removal of CSA Mark, and serves as Notified Body representative or Reviewer for certification decisions or approvals.
  • Keeps Product Group Manager or Lead informed of project status, pointing out major problems and non-compliance, and includes the Technical Advisor or Certifiers in discussions when necessary.
  • Performs field trips and test work at manufacturer’s facilities as required.

Customer Interaction

  • Works with sales to support current clients and develop new opportunities to support growth.
  • Prepares project quotations for cost and time.
  • Classifies product by use, environment, and function; determines applicable requirements and methods.
  • Provides client feedback to managers and sales representatives, and explains different product certification programs and control of production requirements.
  • Explains test rationale and outcomes to customers, supporting delivery of evaluation and test results.

Testing

  • Performs within established DQD guidelines.
  • Prepares test lab work orders and special testing documentation, including applicable standard sections, test sample plan, data collection methods, job hazard analysis, and additional instructions.
  • Shows experience performing common testing within CSA laboratories.
  • Has knowledge of the clauses and tests within the standards they support and can apply them across multiple product types.
  • Compiles evaluation record, data and summary test results into forms, templates, and checklists without supervision.
  • Correctly interprets test results without supervision and provides guidance to Lab Technicians ensuring proper application of requirements.

Self Development

  • Subject to internal audits for compliance and competence, and seeks expert knowledge of standards and their relationship to laboratory tests.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of requirements for new and revised standards.
  • Participates in CSA Group Continuous Improvement and Innovation projects, recommends and delivers new programs or equipment to expand core capabilities.
  • Studies standards, documentation, bulletins and technical articles, and participates in Standards development work.
  • Provides technical expertise on committees, task forces, and shares knowledge with staff and CSA via written or verbal communication and training events.
  • Actively seeks new ways to improve engineering and laboratory testing procedures and data capture templates for accuracy and consistency.

Work Environment

Normal office conditions; spends some time in laboratory. The position requires regular attendance, punctuality, overtime, and frequent deadlines. May involve travel out-of-town and exposure to dirty or hazardous environments at client facilities. Requires ability to work unsupervised, handle computer screen use, concentration, and occasional physical effort.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with registration as a Professional Engineer, typically at least 6+ years of work experience in a similar industry and/or 3 years at the qualified level.
  • College Diploma in a relevant technological discipline with 6+ years of work experience in a similar industry and/or 3 years at the qualified level.
  • Knowledge of CSA, UL and IEC standards; variety of test procedures.
  • Knowledge of CSA programs and services.
  • Leadership and management skills.
  • Computer proficiency (word processing, keyboarding).
  • Strong problem-solving and detail-oriented skills.
  • Strong organizational, time, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • High level of communication skills, verbal and written.
