Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Registered Children's Nurse to join the Nottingham Children's Complex Nutrition Team on a 12-month maternity cover secondment or fixed term contract.

You will become part of a skilled and supportive multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality care to children and young people with complex nutritional needs. This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.

As a key member of the Complex Nutrition Team, you will:

  • Provide specialist nursing care to children requiring complex nutritional support

  • Work across inpatient and outpatient settings within the hospital

  • Liaise closely with families, offering guidance, education, and ongoing support

  • Collaborate with the wider MDT to ensure safe, effective, and holistic care

  • Contribute to care planning, clinical reviews, and service development

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Be based at Nottingham Childrens Hospital, working collaboratively within the multiprofessional paediatric nutrition team to deliver advanced nursing care to children and young people.

  • Act as a strong and visible clinical leader, easily identifiable and accessible to patients, families, and staff, providing expert guidance and support.

  • Provide leadership within the Children and Young Peoples Nutrition Team, taking responsibility for appraisals, professional development, supervision, and ensuring compliance with mandatory training.

  • Oversee the daytoday operational management of the service, working as an integral part of the PGHAN (Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition) team.

  • Work alongside the consultant PGHAN team to contribute to the strategic development, commissioning, and strengthening of clinical networks for paediatric nutrition.

  • Collaborate with the wider nutrition MDT and nurse educators to support the development of Trustwide policy and best practice in nutrition. This includes building strong relationships with wardbased nutrition link nurses and leading audit activity to evaluate and improve current practice.

  • Promote and advance patientcentred care, ensuring a collaborative and holistic approach with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Manage an allocated caseload, providing specialist assessment, planning, and ongoing review of children with complex nutritional needs.

  • Play a key role in service development, offering education, advice, and support to patients, families, and professionals involved in the care of children requiring complex nutrition, including parenteral nutrition (PN).

  • Exercise a high level of autonomy and clinical decisionmaking, demonstrating advanced practice skills within the specialty.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Child
  • BSc/BA in nursing
  • Demonstrable teaching qualification
  • Able to effectively coordinate care for children with long term conditions
  • Significant experience in gastroentrology and nutrition

Desirable

  • Non medical prescriber

Communication and Relationship

Essential

  • Evidence of initiating and implementing change effectively in response to clinical or organisational demands.
  • Able to present and receive relevant clinical information to or from a multi-professional audience.

Desirable

  • Good team building skills able to demonstrate how to motivate and lead.

Planning and Organising

Essential

  • Evidence of leadership experience.
  • Able to develop, implement and monitor local protocols and objectives.
  • Able to organise own workload.
