Job summary

Band 7 Clinical Psychologist (15 hrs per week)

To work as a clinician in child and adolescent psychological services at UCLH with specific responsibility for supporting inpatient and outpatient paediatric psychology services. The post holder will provide a specialist psychological assessment and treatment service across paediatrics. This is a fixed term temporary role.

The post holder will offer advice and consultation on clients' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and within the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures.On the UCH site, there are acute and general paediatric services to the district in addition to specialist children's and adolescent services (including adolescent medicine and cancer). This post is part of the multi-disciplinary child and adolescent psychological medicine service. The post holder will contribute to the systemic consultation service and a range of psychological therapies for in-patients and out-patients at UCH.

To provide specialist psychological assessments and treatment of children, young people, and their families, using individual, parent and family interviews, informal observation and formal developmental, psychometric and other assessment methods as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

The role is to provide specialist assessment and therapy with children and young people affected by a range of chronic health conditions. There will also be opportunities for group work, training and consultation to other professionals. We are not able to offer visits to the department however we welcome discussions with potential candidates.

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Honours degree in psychology or related disciplines, and a Doctorate and/or PhD level in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) (acquired as part of the clinical training).
  • Registered Practitioner Psychologist by the HPC.
  • High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of neuropsychological assessment, intervention and management
  • Knowledge of specialised assessment and therapeutic approaches in a Specialist Paediatric Service.
  • Ability to make diagnostic decisions, give second opinions and make differential diagnoses as part of multidisciplinary assessments.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, research design and data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with children and young people living with long term health conditions
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and neuropsychological assessments and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including community, primary care, outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Experience of working with and promoting diversity.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
  • Ability to work with interpreters.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Previous experience of research indicating the ability to conduct research autonomously, with supervision as required.
  • Ability to critique and evaluate scientific data and best practice clinical guidelines.
  • Advanced IT skills (including video editing, word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages).

Communication

Essential

  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates professional and effective verbal and written communication skills including excellent negotiation skills with patients, carers and other health professional staff in service delivery.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS where information may be highly sensitive and there may be barriers to acceptance.
  • Evidence of working well in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Evidence of effective clinical reasoning in the assessment and management of young people living in complex systems.
