About Viper Applied Science

Viper Applied Science develops advanced computational software for modelling extreme events, including explosions, blast loading and structural response. Our software is used internationally by engineers, scientists and organisations working across defence, security, civil engineering and industrial safety.

We are a small technical team, which means the person joining us will have the opportunity to work directly on new numerical methods and take them from research ideas through to production software used by customers around the world.

Please double check you have the right level of experience and qualifications by reading the full overview of this opportunity below.

The role

We are looking for a Computational Scientist to join our team in Aberdour, Scotland.

The role sits at the intersection of computational science, numerical methods and software development. You will develop new algorithms for our simulation software, investigate and validate numerical methods, implement them in production code, and help turn research concepts into practical engineering tools.

This would suit someone with a strong background in computational physics or engineering who enjoys both understanding the underlying science and implementing it in code.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement numerical algorithms for modelling extreme events and structural loading.
  • Work with methods including CFD, finite element and/or meshless approaches.
  • Develop high-performance implementations using technologies such as CUDA, OpenMP and MPI.
  • Write maintainable scientific software in languages such as C++, Fortran and Python.
  • Verify and validate new numerical methods against analytical, experimental and published data.
  • Document algorithms and software functionality clearly.
  • Work closely with the wider Viper team to develop and release new capabilities.
  • Provide technical input and support to customers using our software.

Essential experience

  • Master's degree, PhD or equivalent experience in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or another relevant discipline.
  • Strong background in numerical modelling, scientific computing or computational engineering.
  • Programming experience in C++, Fortran or a similar compiled language.
  • Experience implementing or developing numerical algorithms.
  • Ability to analyse computational results and understand the underlying physics.
  • Comfortable working independently on technically challenging problems.

Desirable experience

Experience in any of the following would be particularly useful:

  • CUDA or GPU computing.
  • OpenMP or MPI.
  • Computational fluid dynamics.
  • Finite element analysis.
  • Meshless numerical methods.
  • Compressible flow, shock physics or explosion modelling.
  • Python or MATLAB for analysis and scripting.
  • Linux development environments.

What we offer

Viper operates a hybrid working model, combining home working with time at our office in Aberdour.

We offer a competitive salary, pension, life cover and opportunities for professional development. xwzovoh As part of a small technical team, you will have substantial ownership of your work and the opportunity to see algorithms you develop become part of commercial engineering software used internationally.
