Main duties of the job

Consultants have a responsibility to the Chief Executive and acommensurate authority in respect of the reasonable and effectiveuse of such hospital resources and staff as they use and influence.Each Consultant is expected to deliver their service within the agreedresources available, supported by the responsible Service Manager.In addition, there is a collective responsibility falling on all Consultantsto consult with colleagues, and hence to co-ordinate their individualactivities, in order to ensure that the particular clinical service withwhich they are involved operates effectively.

The Trust places a high importance on excellence in clinical practice.Full participation in ensuring compliance with the Trust's ClinicalGovernance process is required.

Maintain and process all information concerning patients, staff,contractors or the business of the Trust to which the post holder hasaccess, without divulging such information to any third party or makeuse of information gained in the course of employment, except wherethis is clearly within the remit of the post holder and the other party'sresponsibility.

About us

The Emergency Department is a state of the art £6.2million newbuild completed in December 2014 with a 4-bed resuscitation room(1 dedicated paediatric bay), 16 majors treatment rooms includingan eye/ENT room, an isolation room, facilities for patients withdementia, and internal CBRN decontamination facilities.

There are separate paediatric and adult waiting areas, and a chaircentric observation area with long ranging views over the Yorkshirecountryside. X-ray facilities and a plaster room are within thedepartment and there is an excellent departmental ultrasoundmachine.

We have a new co-located Urgent Treatment Centre which also hasseparate paediatric and adult waiting areas which opened in July2024.

CT services are co-located and supported by 24/7 on-siteradiographer cover supporting timely access to CT. There is anexcellent co-located psychiatric liaison nurse service.

The department benefits from a purpose built adjacent multispecialty Acute Assessment Unit and Ambulatory Care Unit enablinghigh quality same-day emergency care (SDEC), and strongcollaborative relationships with inpatient specialty colleagues.

Our ED sees over 75,000 patients per year of which around 15,000are children.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialty
  • Revalidated (or in state of readiness for future)

Desirable

  • Other Relevant Qualification (eg BSc)
  • ALS, ATLS or ETC, APLS

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Extensive experience of the full range of Emergency Medicine presentations

Management Experience

Essential

  • Understanding of management issues, clinical governance, service planning and development and quality improvement Willingness to lead service developments

Desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to manage eg project work, mentoring junior staff Demonstrated ability to take on leadership role

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching experience

Desirable

  • Formal training in teaching methods eg Train the Trainers course Demonstrated ability in teaching and training

Clinical Goverance & Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in audit
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Logical thinking, problem solving and decision making
  • Team working and leadership skills

Desirable

  • Understanding and willingness to follow clinical governance agenda
