Job summary

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive General Surgical team of 14 Consultants mainly based at King's Mill Hospital. The department provides comprehensive general surgical emergency and elective surgery, supported by the regional tertiary centre and is committed to delivering safe, personalised and compassionate care to patients across the region.

Main duties of the job

Overview of the Consultant General Surgery role

1. Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

2. To share best practice and promote team working within the General Surgical department and GI multidisciplinary team.

3. Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.

4. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

5. To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination (FRCS or equivalent)
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) candidates must hold specialist registration at the time of application.
  • Membership of Royal College of Surgeons

Desirable

  • Postgraduate thesis
  • MD/MSc/MMEd/PhD
  • Completed fellowship programme in UGI/HPB surgery
  • JAG accreditation for gastroscopies/ERCP/EUS

Experience

Essential

  • Successful completion of an appropriate SpR/ST/equivalent training programme
  • Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
  • Ability to lead and maintain clinical credibility with a multi-professional team including senior trainees
  • Extensive practical General Surgery experience, in particular UGI/HPB Surgery
  • Capable of taking part in the emergency General Surgery on call rota (excluding vascular)

Desirable

  • Experience of advanced laparoscopic UGI/HPB surgery

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload

Desirable

  • The tential to be Service Director or alternative medical management role in the future

Teaching

Essential

  • Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role.

Other

Essential

  • Communication skills - to have language competency and communication skills necessary to do the job safely & competently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
