Main duties of the job

We are seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in glaucoma to join our friendly, supportive and forward thinking Eye Unit, with an anticipated start date of Nov or Dec 2026. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient care by delivering high-quality, specialist glaucoma services within a collaborative multidisciplinary team known for its innovation and commitment to continuous improvement. We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician with expertise or a strong interest in glaucoma, excellent teamwork skills, and a passion for delivering outstanding patient-centred care.

You will:

- Deliver expert care in the management of complex glaucoma cases- Undertake glaucoma clinics and surgical activity, including conventional surgery and MIGS- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the glaucoma service- Participate in the teaching and training of resident doctors, nurses, optoms and wider staff- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements in glaucoma care and surgical practice

Job responsibilities

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, rated Good by the CQC. We are seeking a motivated Consultant Ophthalmologist to join our dynamic Eye Unit.

You will work within an established multidisciplinary glaucoma team delivering a comprehensive service, including complex surgery and MIGS.

The Southampton Eye Unit is a purpose-built facility with modern dedicated outpatient departments, advanced imaging (including anterior segment OCT, Optos and digital slit lamps) and modern fully equipped ophthalmic theatres with state-of-the-art technology (including intraoperative OCT and 3D NGENUITY).

Person specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential

  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Fellowship in glaucoma
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Experience in glaucoma clinics
  • Experience in performing glaucoma surgery
  • Experience of teaching and audit
  • Publications in ophthalmology

Desirable

  • MD or PhD
  • Clinical trials experience
  • Publication in high impact journals
  • Experience of running virtual glaucoma clinics
  • CCT or within 3 months of completion of CCT

Aptitudes and Skills

Essential

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines

  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
