Job Overview


It is an exciting time to join our welcoming and friendly team of 29 Anaesthetic/Intensive Care Consultants based at Glangwili General Hospital. The successful candidate will support the current establishment of NHS and academic staff contributing to the delivery of Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetic services in Carmarthenshire.


Candidates with a single CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or with dual specialty training are sought to join a dedicated team in the health boards largest Anaesthetic/Intensive care department based primarily in Glangwili General hospital, the main acute site for the health board.


The Critical care unit in Glangwili Hospital was opened in 2013 with approximately 500 admissions a year. There are 10 funded critical care beds to be used flexibly for level 3 and level 2 patients, with surge capacity of 17 beds. The unit is modern and spacious with all bed areas equipped with Philips critical care information systems.


We provide training in critical care for Anaesthesia and Intensive care trainees at all levels along with internal medicine and foundation trainees. We have at least 2 airway competent trainees covering the unit 24 hrs a day. This is provided by a mix of Specialty/ SAS grade Anaesthetists and trainees.


Main duties of the job


The post is for a Consultant in Intensive Care with or without dual CCT in another specialty.


The candidate will join a team of Intensive Care Consultants with a mix of single CCT and dual CCT.


The Critical Care week is from Monday to Friday 8 am to 6pm beginning with a consultant led handover from the night to the day team. On call attracts a band 3 supplement and is provided at a frequency of 1 in 8 with plans to extend the consultant workforce to give a frequency of 1 in 10.


From Monday to Friday there are 2 Critical care consultants from 8am to 6pm based at Glangwili Hospital. To maintain continuity of care, Critical care day-time sessions are worked in a weekly block with prospective cover.

  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers

  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services
