Job summary

We are seeking a 10 PA Consultant Paediatric Intensivist for Nottingham Children's Hospital at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and CoMET, the East Midlands Paediatric Transport Service. CoMET is based at Castle Donington in a purpose facility(DE74 2NP). This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic team of consultant paediatric intensivists in this RCPCH approved PICM grid training centre. The team of paediatric intensive care consultants work very closely together,providing a very supportive group and is therefore an ideal environment for new consultant appointments.The wide clinical exposure across a variety of tertiary and quaternary children's specialties is intellectually and practically stimulating and also very rewarding.

Nottingham Children's Hospital at QMC is mainly situated in East Block on D and E floors:

  • Five in-patient wards - 110 Beds
  • The Paediatric Critical Care Unit - 14 Beds (flexible between intensive care and high dependency)
  • An Oncology Day Case Unit with anaesthetic facilities
  • A Teenage Cancer ward
  • A Short Stay unit for observation of the acutely ill child
  • A large Hospital school
  • The Academic Division of Child Health (University of Nottingham School of Human Development)

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - 32 cots (B floor) Children's outpatient department with 30 000 attendances per year (B floor)

  • A separate children's A and E department sees over 40,000 children per year (A floor)

Nottingham is the Lead Centre for PCCU in North East Midlands and since April 2012 has become East Midlands Major Trauma Centre.

Job responsibilities

The Paediatric Critical Care area at QMC admitted 498 patients in 2024 (420 emergencies). We deliver around 5000 (4999 in 2024) bed days per year, of which 2584 invasively ventilated (ETT and tracheostomy) and 2415 NIV bed days. Our PIM3 adjusted SMR FOR 2021-2023 was ~ 0.80.

We support a variety of specialist services including:

  • Supra-regional nephrology and renal replacement treatment, including kidney transplants
  • Supra-regional spinal surgery
  • Regional neurosurgery
  • Regional oncology
  • The busiest Major Trauma Centre in the UK
  • Regional neurology
  • Regional paediatric ENT
  • Regional general paediatric surgery

Person specification

Professional Registration

Essential

  • oFull GMC registration
  • oEligible to be included on the Specialist Register
  • oCCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Professional qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP/MRCPCH/FRCA/FRCS or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Higher Professional degree

Clinical Skills/experiance

Essential

  • Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
  • Substantial experience in the transfer of critically ill children
  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description
  • APLS provider
  • Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum as part training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved centre/rotation PICM plus six months (minimum) of anaesthetics (standalone) OR training assessed to be equivalent by the GMC OR Existing practicing substantive consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care

Desirable

  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • APLS instructor

Managment Skills
