About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join an established private healthcare provider specialising in the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.

The role offers an opportunity to work within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment, providing consultant-level clinical care to adults accessing outpatient rehabilitation services.

The successful candidate will work across a combination of face-to-face clinics in Edinburgh and online consultations, providing flexibility alongside a varied and clinically rewarding caseload.

The Role

As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide direct clinical care and consultant-level medical leadership within the service.

You will work closely with medical colleagues, nursing staff, therapists and senior management to ensure the safe, effective and timely assessment and treatment of patients presenting with psychiatric, addiction and co-occurring mental health needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments of new outpatient referrals and existing patients.
  • Assess mental health, substance use, relevant physical health factors, risk and treatment needs.
  • Provide ongoing psychiatric reviews, treatment planning and risk management.
  • Prescribe and manage pharmacological treatments in line with relevant clinical guidelines and policies.
  • Contribute to the medical oversight of detoxification and stabilisation programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to provide coordinated, patient-centred care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case reviews and clinical handovers as required.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, incident reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support safe referral, assessment, treatment and discharge processes.
  • Liaise with residential, inpatient and community services where appropriate.
  • Provide clinical advice and consultant-level support to other medical staff where required.
  • Maintain compliance with professional, regulatory and organisational standards.
About You

We are looking for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a strong background in working with adults experiencing substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Essential Requirements
  • Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise in the UK.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in General Psychiatry or another relevant psychiatry specialty.
  • Previous substantive appointment as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, or equivalent consultant-level experience meeting relevant recognition requirements.
  • Already holding, or demonstrably eligible to obtain, Bupa consultant recognition.
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Appropriate medical indemnity cover for independent consultant practice.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary service.
  • Excellent clinical judgement, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to safe, ethical and evidence-based clinical practice.
Desirable
  • Existing recognition with AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality or other major UK private medical insurers.
  • Experience in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience managing medically and psychiatrically complex patients.
  • An interest in teaching, supervision or service development.
