Cover Supervisor / Classroom Assistant
A fantastic opportunity for a Cover Supervisor / Classroom Assistant to support young people in a busy secondary school environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with students, building confidence in the classroom and gaining valuable education experience, with full training provided.

SALARY: £27,779 per annum FTE / Actual Annual Salary £17,846 + Benefits
LOCATION: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire
JOB TYPE: Part-Time, Contract (Starting September 2026 to August 2027)
WORKING HOURS: 28.35 hours per week, 8:30am to 3:10pm Monday to Friday, term time only (38 weeks)
JOB OVERVIEW
As a Cover Supervisor / Classroom Assistant you will supervise classes during the absence of the regular teacher, ensuring students understand the work set and remain focused throughout the lesson.
The Cover Supervisor / Classroom Assistant will support a positive learning environment across both key stages, using strong communication, classroom management and behaviour management skills.
This role could suit someone looking to build a career in education, work with young people or take a practical step towards future teaching or school support work.
DUTIES
Your duties as the Cover Supervisor / Classroom Assistant include:
Lesson Cover: Supervise classes during teacher absence, deliver work from existing plans and help students remain focused on learning tasks
Tutor Registration: Cover tutor registrations when required, read out messages and daily notices and support classroom expectations
Student Supervision: Escort students to assemblies when covering tutor time and supervise them throughout the assembly duration
Classroom Management: Ensure students enter lessons appropriately, follow the schools code of conduct and meet classroom standards
Behaviour Management: Respond promptly to poor behaviour or inattentiveness, taking suitable action to avoid disruption to whole-class learning
Learning Support: Communicate the lesson objective, clarify instructions and support students where possible with understanding and completing work
Registers and Records: Take lesson registers, complete referrals where appropriate and leave relevant notes for teachers, tutors or year leaders
Classroom Organisation: Collate work, resources and textbooks at the end of lessons and ensure classrooms are left tidy
School Duties: Undertake a supervision duty, such as break or lunchtime duty, once a week
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Confident working with young people in a classroom or school environment
Able to communicate clearly and positively with students, teachers and colleagues
Strong classroom management and behaviour management skills, or the willingness to develop these through training
Able to follow lesson plans, instructions, school procedures and behaviour policies accurately
Calm, reliable and professional approach when supporting students and managing classroom expectations
Good organisational skills with the ability to keep students on task and manage resources effectively
Able to work well as part of a team and learn new skills
Interest in education, teaching, school support or working with young people
