Job Overview
NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Specialist Estates Services (NWSSP-SES) is committed to championing patient centred and sustainable healthcare environments. We achieve this by providing a range of professional and technical estates services for NHS Wales and policy advice for the Welsh Government’s (WG) Department for Health and Social Services.
As part of a small professional team you will be responsible for supporting both the Principal and Senior Decontamination Engineer in the provision of advice and guidance to Welsh Government, Health Boards/Trusts of NHS Wales and other key stakeholders on medical device decontamination issues. Additionally the team are responsible for the organization and completion of the annual programme of testing decontamination equipment across NHS Wales.
To fulfill this role you will possess extensive experience in the testing and validation of decontamination equipment in accordance with the requirements and guidance set out within the relevant Welsh Health Technical Memoranda (WHTMs). You will have a comprehensive understanding of decontamination systems and technologies, associated plant and equipment, utility systems, and supporting infrastructure that serve a variety of departments within a Healthcare environment.

Main duties of the job
- The Decontamination Engineer supports the Senior Decontamination Engineer in the provision of advice, guidance and support to the Welsh Government and the NHS in Wales on all decontamination issues for Sterile Services Departments, Endoscopy, Pathology, Pharmacies and Primary Care.
- The Decontamination Engineer supports the Senior Decontamination Engineer in organising the annual national programme of sterilizer and washer disinfector validation for the NHS in Wales.
- The Decontamination Engineer undertakes specialised decontamination testing on behalf of the NHS in Wales as part of the annual national decontamination testing programme.
- Organise and lead formal validation close out meetings with senior NHS management following testing. This involves presenting highly complex, technical validation data to senior decontamination and estates managers.
- Supports the Senior Decontamination Engineer in the provision of advice on the procurement, installation and commissioning of sterilizing, washer/disinfecting and endoscopy reprocessing equipment for the NHS in Wales including advising customers of the appropriate methods of decontaminating instruments and operation of equipment to ensure that all published requirements are complied with, and that best practice is followed

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- A degree qualification B.Eng or equivalent in an appropriate Engineering subject.
- Recognised specialist knowledge and training in the field of medical device decontamination, equivalent to master’s level.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Must have considerable specialist knowledge in the field of medical device decontamination including testing a wide range of decontamination equipment in compliance with WHTM requirements.
- A thorough understanding of issues associated with reprocessing medical devices and decontamination systems used in healthcare, including specialized sterilization equipment.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working for the NHS on decontamination equipment.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- The ability to deliver within set deadlines and targets.
- High workload capacity and perseverance
