Job summary

Main duties of the job

Following significant investment in the Trust, we have developed outstanding plans for new developments which will push RCHT right to the forefront of modern hospital care. So we are now investing in our Estates team in both strategic project management and in the day to day management of our maintenance and buildings. We are interested in hearing from highly motivated, hardworking and committed individuals with experience in their field of work, as well as people looking for a change in career direction. Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised mechanical engineering qualification to Level 3 or above with substantial relevant post qualification experience in a complex engineering environment.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

  • HNC/HND (or working toward) in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering
  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
  • Incorporated Engineer registration or working towards professional registration.
  • Leadership or management qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Management or support of complex mechanical engineering systems within a large and diverse estate.
  • Management of specialist contractors and service providers.
  • Technical auditing, investigations and report writing.
  • Interpretation and application of legislation, standards and engineering guidance.
  • Risk assessments, permit to work systems and safe systems of work.
  • Supporting operational estates services within a complex environment.

Desirable

  • Recent experience maintaining complex mechanical plant in a large, safety-critical environment (healthcare, pharma, process, or similar)
  • NHS Estates experience and familiarity with HTMs/SFG20
  • Experience supporting capital projects and lifecycle replacement programmes.
  • Experience of budget management, procurement and contract management.
  • Experience supervising or managing staff and contractors.

PRACTICAL AND INTELLECTUAL SKILLS (INCLUDING ANY SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE)

Essential

  • Detailed knowledge of HTMs and associated engineering guidance relevant to mechanical building services.
  • Ability to diagnose and investigate complex engineering faults and system failures.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics and specifications.
  • Competent IT and CAFM user.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to balance patient safety, statutory compliance and operational priorities when making decisions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience mentoring apprentices or providing technical guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Experience acting as an Authorised Person or Competent Person within an NHS or similarly regulated environment.
  • Experience presenting technical information to senior stakeholders and non-technical audiences.
