Job summary

The Emergency Department at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is an extremely busy department with a workload that is typical of a major urban centre. There are currently approximately 95,000 new attendances per year with follow up via a clinic or ENP review seeing approximately 2,000 patients per year.

A wide spectrum of Emergency work is dealt with, including Acute Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedic, ENT and Psychiatric emergencies and the Trust is accredited as a Trauma Unit as part of the Merseyside & Cheshire Trauma Network.

The initial management of all patients is in the hands of the Emergency Department staff, but all the acute specialities provide in reach services to the department. Many of the patients requiring short-term acute treatment are managed on the Emergency Observation ward, which is adjacent to the Emergency Department. These patients remain under the care of the Emergency Department Consultants.

There are excellent working relationships with the Acute and Stroke Physicians, Cardiology, Infectious Diseases to name but a few and staff are focused on working together to deliver high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

The work of the F2 will be carried out under the supervision of more senior members of the medical staff and ultimately Consultants, and will include the documentation and day to day care of patients and attendance at ward rounds. F2s will have contact with Medical, Nursing, Professional and Technical and Administration staff.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Clerking & Assessment: Initially assessing patients (including minors, majors, and resuscitation), taking histories, and performing physical examinations.
  • Investigations & Treatment: Ordering appropriate bloods, interpreting scans and ECGs, and initiating treatment plans.
  • Practical Procedures: Performing routine ED procedures (e.g., cannulation, catheterization, suturing, and fracture manipulation) under supervision.
  • Discharge & Admission: Formulating safe discharge plans, writing TTOs (To Take Out) medications, and safely referring patients to inpatient teams.
  • Multidisciplinary Teamwork: Working closely with nurses, ENPs, and allied health professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • oEligible for Full or Limited registration with the GMC at time of starting post
  • oMBBS (or equivalent)
  • oSatisfactory progress in Foundation Year 1 programme (or equivalent evidence of competence) at the time of application

  • oDistinctions, scholarships, prizes
  • oAttendance at relevant course(s) eg. ALS, ALERT

ELIGIBILITY

Essential

  • oHave qualified within the last three years (exclude time for maternity leave, paternity leave or other/time between jobs associated with child care responsibilities)

CLINICAL CARE (Knowledge and Skills)

  • oCompetent in basic clinical procedures eg CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • oAble to prioritise clinical need
  • oAware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
  • oUnderstands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • oUnderstands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice
  • oUnderstands the principles of clinical governance --ensures patients are not put at risk
  • oUnderstands the importance of working effectively in teams

Desirable
