Gas Generation Engineer (On-site Power)
The Gas Generation Engineer will take ownership of the site’s on-site gas generation and power-generation infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable and continuous operation of the plant supporting the MSAI Scotland data centre.
The role will oversee the operation and maintenance of gas gensets/turbines, gas trains, pressure reduction systems and associated HV synchronisation equipment, while ensuring compliance with gas safety, emissions and environmental requirements.
The engineer will work closely with SGN, specialist gas contractors, electrical teams and the wider Critical Facilities team to maintain reliable power generation and ensure the plant is ready to respond to grid interruptions or other critical power events.
Duties
- Operate and maintain the site’s gas generation plant, including gas gensets/turbines and associated auxiliary systems.
- Maintain and monitor the gas train, valves, regulators and safety systems.
- Operate and maintain the gas pressure reduction station and associated equipment.
- Support the safe operation of HV synchronisation, paralleling and generator control systems.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance, inspections, testing and reactive repairs.
- Monitor generator performance, fuel supply, pressures, temperatures, emissions and system alarms.
- Diagnose and respond to generator, gas-system and power-generation faults.
- Ensure the generation plant remains available and operational for standby and/or primary power requirements.
- Support generator synchronisation and safe connection to the site electrical network.
- Manage and monitor gas supply, fuel usage and generation efficiency.
- Ensure emissions are monitored and managed in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Maintain accurate plant records, maintenance logs, operating procedures and technical documentation.
- Ensure gas systems and generation equipment are operated in accordance with approved SOPs, EOPs and emergency procedures.
- Manage and coordinate specialist gas, generator and power-generation contractors.
- Liaise with SGN regarding gas supply, pressure, planned works, outages and infrastructure requirements.
- Work closely with the site’s gas contractor and electrical engineering teams.
- Support commissioning, testing and performance verification of new generation equipment.
- Ensure compliance with IGEM guidance, G99, ATEX/DSEAR and relevant gas, electrical and environmental requirements.
- Complete and review risk assessments, method statements, permits and safe systems of work.
- Participate in incident investigations and root-cause analysis following plant failures or safety incidents.
- Support emergency response during grid failures, generator faults, gas incidents and other critical events.
- Participate in an on-call rota for critical power-generation incidents.
- Identify opportunities to improve generation reliability, efficiency, resilience and operational performance.
