GIS Officer

Location: South Wales, hybrid working

Pay Rate: £19.54 per hour

Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Assignment length: Initial 3 month temporary assignment with potential for extension

Working Pattern: Hybrid, approximately 1 day per week in the office

Start Date: ASAP

Are you an experienced GIS professional with strong ArcGIS skills and experience creating and publishing high quality mapping products?

We're recruiting for a GIS Officer to support a public sector in South Wales.

This is a varied opportunity combining GIS, spatial data, mapping, visualisation and general project support. You'll play an important role in producing accurate mapping products and visual content to support consultation activities, stakeholder engagement and wider programme objectives.

The role would suit someone with practical experience using ArcGIS who is confident working with spatial data and producing and publishing maps. Experience with Power BI would also be highly desirable.

What you'll be doing

  • Creating, maintaining and updating GIS maps using ArcGIS
  • Managing and working with spatial datasets to ensure information is accurate and up to date
  • Producing high quality maps, visualisations and graphical content
  • Publishing maps and GIS outputs using appropriate digital platforms
  • Creating and supporting interactive mapping products, including StoryMaps
  • Supporting the development and publication of Power BI reports, dashboards and visualisations
  • Preparing mapping materials and supporting documentation for consultation activities
  • Working with colleagues and stakeholders to understand their GIS and mapping requirements
  • Carrying out data and quality checks to ensure mapping outputs are accurate and fit for purpose
  • Supporting improvements to GIS processes, systems and mapping products
  • Attending meetings, workshops and discussions with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Providing general administrative and project support where required
  • Using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

What we're looking for

  • Previous experience working in GIS, spatial data, mapping or a similar role
  • Strong practical experience using ArcGIS
  • Experience creating, editing, managing and publishing GIS maps
  • Good knowledge of spatial data and geographical information
  • Experience producing mapping products and visualisations for different audiences
  • Experience with StoryMaps or other interactive mapping products would be advantageous
  • Experience using Power BI would be highly desirable
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy
  • Good analytical and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with a range of stakeholders
  • Good Microsoft Office and IT skills
  • Experience working within a technical, data or systems based environment
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider team
