Job summary: We are looking for a graduate Engineer to support the development and deployment of SynchroStor’s industrial heat pump systems, focusing on application identification, client engagement, and early-stage project evaluation. This is a rare opportunity to work on breakthrough clean energy technology with real industrial impact, as part of a fast-growing, well-backed startup.

Location: The role is based at our facilities outside Edinburgh. This is an in-person role and candidates must have a permanent right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Engineer’s work supports the team developing and deploying of SynchroStor’s industrial heat pump systems, focusing on application identification, client engagement, and early-stage project evaluation. Responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and assessing industrial applications, including process data and plant layout
  • Supporting client engagement through meetings, technical discussions
  • Performing thermodynamic and process modelling (Excel, MATLAB and Simulink/Simscape)
  • Conducting technical and techno-economic feasibility studies
  • Developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, and 2D CAD drawings for system integration
  • Supporting preparation of technical reports, proposals, tenders and budget estimates
  • Undertaking occasional site visits (approximately quarterly) to industrial facilities
  • Feeding application insights back into ongoing R&D system development
  • Specification, sizing and procurement of process equipment
  • Contribution to safety studies (HAZOP, HAZID) and safety improvements

As is typical in a growing company, responsibilities may evolve over time, and the Engineer may be required to support a range of additional activities in the team.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree (BEng/MEng) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated interest in energy systems, thermodynamics or low-carbon technologies
  • Evidence of relevant experience beyond academic requirements (e.g. internships, summer placements, or extracurricular engineering projects such as a student rocketry club or similar)
  • Good understanding of thermodynamic cycles and/or process engineering principles
  • Proficiency in Excel and MS Office; MATLAB/Simulink or similar advantageous
  • Experience with P&IDs or CAD tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Plant3D, DraftSight) advantageous
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Organised and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a willingness to learn
  • Willingness to engage with clients and undertake occasional site visits
