Job Summary
The Honing Setter Operator is responsible for setting, operating, and maintaining honing machines to produce precision-engineered components to specified quality standards. The role involves machine set-up, tooling adjustments, inspection of finished parts, and ensuring production targets are achieved while maintaining a safe and efficient working environment.
Key Responsibilities
Set up and prepare honing machines in accordance with production specifications and engineering drawings.
Select and install appropriate tooling, fixtures, and honing stones.
Perform machine adjustments to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface finish requirements are met.
Operate honing equipment safely and efficiently to achieve production schedules.
Conduct first-off, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring equipment.
Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality standards.
Record production data, inspection results, and machine settings as required.
Carry out routine machine maintenance and cleaning activities.
Identify and report equipment faults, tooling issues, or quality concerns.
Work closely with quality, engineering, and production teams to resolve manufacturing issues.
Maintain housekeeping standards in accordance with 5S principles.
Adhere to all company health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Previous experience operating and setting honing machines within a manufacturing environment.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
Experience using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, bore gauges, verniers, and dial indicators.
Knowledge of geometric tolerances and surface finish requirements.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
Apprenticeship or engineering qualification.
Experience within aerospace, automotive, precision engineering, or advanced manufacturing sectors.
Knowledge of CNC-controlled honing equipment.
Understanding of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles.
Qualifications
GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
Engineering qualification, apprenticeship, or relevant vocational training preferred.
Working Conditions
Manufacturing workshop environment.
Standing for extended periods and handling precision components.
Shift work may be required, including overtime when necessary.
Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
