Immigration and Public Law Solicitor

About the Role

Asylum Aid is seeking an Immigration and Public Law Solicitor to develop and lead a strategic public law caseload. You will work closely with the Public Law Supervisor and Director of Legal Casework to drive change through strategic litigation, representing clients on asylum and human rights claims, and bringing judicial review challenges in immigration and asylum matters.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and representation to clients on asylum, human rights, and judicial review challenges in immigration matters and the treatment of asylum seekers and migrants.
  • Identify common issues from the wider team's caseload suitable for strategic legal challenges and contribute to internal strategy discussions.
  • Attend external meetings on behalf of Asylum Aid and contribute to sector-wide strategy discussions.
  • Apply for Legal Aid Agency case funding through the CCMS, obtain costs and scope extensions, and submit claims for payment.
  • Maintain client files and records in line with file management procedures.
  • Provide technical supervision and training in judicial review procedure to other staff where necessary.
  • Ensure legal aid and other income is maximised and targets are achieved.

Qualifications

  • Qualified as a solicitor with experience in asylum and public law.
  • Strong knowledge of judicial review procedure and legal aid funding processes.
  • Experience representing clients in complex immigration and human rights matters.
  • Understanding of forced migration, asylum systems, and human rights law.
  • Ability to identify strategic litigation opportunities and drive change through the courts.
