Apple Recruitment are recruiting URGENTLY for a Temporary Irish Interpreter / Translator (part
time) on behalf of the NI Assembly. This role’s expected duration is from 3 rd September 2026 to 19 th
March 2027. Hourly rate is £22.89 per hour. Hours: 22.2 per week, Monday &; Tuesday, full days, 3 rd
working day to be agreed – limited hybrid available.
Job Purpose
The Office of the Official Report (Hansard) is responsible for providing the official reports of sittings
of the Assembly, meetings of Assembly Committees and a range of other reporting and editorial
services.
An official report is a substantially verbatim transcript of the proceedings; it records what was said
as well as what was decided. Hansard reports proceedings in the language used by those speaking
and it also provides a simultaneous passive interpretation service to ensure that a person without
Irish is not placed at a disadvantage during Assembly sittings or some Committee meetings. In
addition, the Office provides text translation and other miscellaneous services in respect of Irish.
The Assembly Commission wishes to appoint an Interpreter/Translator with excellent interpreting,
text translation and editorial skills in respect of the Irish language.
The person appointed will be expected to provide simultaneous interpreting and text translation
services to facilitate the proceedings of the Northern Ireland Assembly and may also be expected to
provide other miscellaneous editorial/proofreading services in Irish and English.
The role of Interpreter/Translator (Irish Language) is based in Parliament Buildings, Stormont Estate,
Belfast. The role is 37 hours per week, usually undertaken Monday to Friday, however out-of-hours
work, including evenings (particularly on days when the Assembly is sitting) and occasionally
weekends, will be required, for which time off in lieu will be provided.

Main Duties
The Interpreter/Translator (Irish Language) will be expected to:
 Provide Irish to English, and on occasion vice versa, simultaneous interpretation fluently,
confidently and accurately for Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings and any other
events/functions as required;
 Provide a written report of any Irish used during Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings
and other events/functions as required;
 Provide miscellaneous editorial services and advice in respect of Irish and English, including the
translation of text, production of subtitles etc;
 Work independently and as part of a wider team to produce excellent results;
 Act on advice and direction from managers and undertake any reasonable task as and when
required;
 Manage their own performance and take the initiative to identify their personal development
needs and how those needs can be met;
 Perform the duties in line with the scheduling and timing of Assembly business, which can mean
working, without notice, unsocial hours and being unable to take leave other than during recess
periods, which are themselves subject to change.

Essential Criteria:
Applicants must possess: 
 GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level passes at grades A to C in four subjects, other than English language, plus a
GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level pass at grade A or A* in English language. 
 A recognised qualification in respect of the Irish language that is equivalent to or higher than A-
level.
 Excellent oral and written Irish and English knowledge and skills and one year’s experience of
providing interpretation and translation services in respect of the Irish language.

higher standard to those stated.

providing interpretation and translation services in respect of the Irish language
