Junior Clinical Fellow in Cellular Pathology

Job summary

Applications are invited for a junior clinical fellow in Cellular Pathology. Two years' experience in Cellular Pathology is expected. The post is to support the Cellular Pathology Service for Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (Royal Free Hospital and Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital) and North Middlesex Hospitals.

The main duties will be to participate (on a rotational basis according to departmentrequirements) in the surgical pathology and diagnostic cytology services of the department(including specimen cut-up) and preparation of specimen reports. The successful candidate willbe expected to take part in the undergraduate teaching as necessary.

Further responsibilities include participation in audit and administrative functions of the department.

The Cellular Pathology Service receives around 60,000 surgical specimens and 5000diagnostic cytology specimens per year. The department runs a sub-specialised diagnostichistopathology service for the three hospitals that make up the Trust (Royal Free, Barnet andChase Farm Hospitals) and also for the North Middlesex University Hospital through a servicelevel agreement. There are Specialty Leads for Breast, GI, Skin, Cytology, Urology,Hepatobiliary and Liver.

Main duties of the job

1. This post is to support Cellular Pathology service activity. The post holder will report Surgical and Cytology cases with consultants and perform cut-up duties as per departmental service requirements. The fellow will be expected to attend MDT Meetings for all sub specialities and support where required.

2. The appointee will apply good clinical practice and respect patient confidentiality.

3. The department provides training to postgraduate cellular pathology trainees. As part of this role the appointee may attend training sessions led by consultants and may present cases to clinical colleagues at shared learning meetings (black box/MDTs). The appointee will also be expected to take part in the undergraduate teaching as necessary which mainly involves teaching groups of students on four half days each year.

4. All trainees have their desk, modern microscope and personal computer. The appointee will have access to the pathology LIMS system (HELIX) with facilities for on-screen reporting, access to PACS radiology system, and EPR electronic patient record, and have access to the internet and email. Digital dictation is available. Photomicrography facilities are also available.

5. Participation in audit and administrative functions in the department will be expected. The appointee will attend Black box / teaching sessions and engage in Continued Professional Development activities.

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent
• Registered with the GMC
• FRCPath (part 1)

Desirable

• Postgraduate medical degree

Experience / Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of macroscopic and microscopic pathology to the level required to participate in macroscopic cut-up and histological and cytological reporting rotas, under the supervision of a consultant
