Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for care of newborn babies throughout the Neonatal Service.

  • Being the first responder at deliveries requiring a paediatrician presence
  • Reviewing babies thought to be unwell both on labour ward and the post-natal ward, or those with additional care needs as identified through neonatal alerts and post-natal checks
  • Providing support and completing tasks on the transitional care unit such as discharge checks and Badger letters
  • Admitting babies to the neonatal unit
  • Performing required tasks and procedures on the neonatal unit such as venepuncture and cannulation, and umbilical lines and percutaneous long lines (with support depending on level of experience)
  • Attending neonatal ward rounds and carrying out required tasks - this may involve prescriptions of medications and parental nutrition, requesting tests and completing administrative tasks such as referrals on to other specialties
  • Our neonatal unit has a strong focus on research. We encourage all our junior doctors to be GCP trained and to be involved in any ongoing studies. This may include identifying potential participants, performing tasks and procedures associated with the trials, and in some appropriate cases recruiting and consenting.
