Job summary

This is a locum Consultant post focused on general neurology and acute neurology cover. The postholder will participate in the neurology screening / daily clinic rota for new patients and will also have a weekly follow up clinic and a fortnightly remote clinic. The role will have a significant acute component providing a responsive Consultant led neurological service to A&E, SDEC and acute medical wards as well as TIA clinic cover. There may also be an opportunity to develop a sub-specialty interest in other areas of neurology and to run a weekly sub speciality clinic. There will be a requirement to play an active role in the general workload of the Department including teaching and training of junior medical staff.

Main duties of the job

  • Participation in General Neurology Daily clinic rota (1 in 6 weeks) - seeing new patients, triaging referrals, managing Advice & Guidance requests and supervising the registrars
  • Weekly follow up General Neurology clinic
  • Consultant cover for the acute neurology service - supervising the registrars in reviewing patients in ED, SDEC and the acute inpatient wards ensuring a timely and Consultant led service
  • Weekly subspecialty clinic / MDT meetings
  • Consultant cover for TIA clinics
  • Out of hours cover for stroke

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • Full MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD) or subspecialty fellowship

Registration

Essential

  • Full Registration with GMC
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
  • On the day of interview applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or must have fully completed CESR application and be fully registered on the GMC Neurology Specialist Register. Any applications not meeting these criteria will not be considered

Training and Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in all aspects of neurology including stroke culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or award of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR) by GMC

Desirable

  • Experience of successful working at the interface between the specialties of acute neurology and other medical specialities.

Administration

Essential

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of neurology & stroke services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills

Desirable

  • Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit and Quality Improvement

Essential

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects

Desirable

  • Audit Publications

Research and Publications

Essential

  • Understanding of the role of clinical research

Desirable

  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of neurology or metabolic medicine
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.

Desirable

  • Teaching skills course/qualification
