Job summary

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is looking for a full-time Locum Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. This post is one focusing on general OMFS with opportunity to expand into sub-specialty of choice. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team of supportive consultants providing Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Services to the County of Shropshire and a substantial part of the adjacent Welsh County of Powys.

Main duties of the job

Main Clinical duties include:

  • We are looking for consultant Colleague to undertake work in generality of OMFS which covers patient streams from both Telford & Shrewsbury. The post will also include dedicated new 2 week wait pathway clinics.
  • There will be opportunity to expand scope of practice in sup-specialty of interest depending on service needs.
  • You will undertake Outpatient Clinics at both Hospitals with a main inpatient base and dedicated Head and Neck ward at Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.
  • You will undertake both daycase and inpatient operating which is mostly based at the Royal Princess Hospital at Telford. There is the main theatre complex as well as newly built elective hub for day case procedures.
  • There is a 1 in 4 on-call rota to provide cover of daytime on-call activity and elective inpatient operating.
  • To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
  • To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
  • To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.

Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury which are located 20 minutes' drive apart. Together they provide 99% of our activity. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services.

Job responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external and will include personal objectives, detailing links to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Possession of both a medical degree and Dental degree from UK recognised institutions

Desirable

  • Current ATLS provider certificate
  • ATLS trainer status
  • MFDS or equivalent
  • Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, or equivalent

Entry Criteria

Essential

  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Dental Council (GDC)
  • To be eligible for consideration for a consultant appointment by an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC), candidates must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine and /or Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine/Medicine. We welcome applications from candidates who are within six months of achieving Specialist Registration through either the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR)
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Oral Surgery or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an SAC recommended and approved 5 year minimum training programme in Oral Surgery, or within 6 months of completion
  • 5 years of training within the NHS required for the specialty with evidence of validated surgical logbooks
