Job summary

Supporting OMFS team at Bedfordshire Hospitals to meet the needs of the Sialendopscopy surgical service.

Providing clinic and Theatre shifts for sialendoscopy patients and provide turnaround support to this specific cohort of patients.

Working with the existing team to deliver Sialendoscopy pathways within RTT targets

Main duties of the job

The main duties and responsibilities of the post include: -

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.

Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

To undertake duties as defined within the agreed job plan.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.

To participate in any on-call rotas providing specialist, timely advice, in line with the seven day working national agenda and local service need.

Participate and comply with the requirements for Continuing Professional Development and revalidation as laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons. The Trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

Job responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities of the post include: -

To share the management of OMFS patients requiring admission with colleagues within the OMFS Department.

Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

To undertake duties as defined within the agreed job plan.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.

To participate in any on-call rotas providing specialist, timely advice, in line with the seven day working national agenda and local service need.

Participate and comply with the requirements for Continuing Professional Development and revalidation as laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons. The Trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

The job plans will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.

In addition, it will provide personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

The appointee will participate in clinical audit. It is expected that the appointee will show a commitment to continuing medical education (CME).

Job Plan Contents and Indicative Timetable

1.

This job is a locum post, working as and when needed to support the sialendoscopy pathway within our OMFS Dept for an initial 6 month period.

The pattern of work may change in the future to meet changing needs, with the opportunity to increase clinical sessions being related to surgical and outpatient demand. If there is a need to work between hospital sites, then appropriate travel time will be incorporated into the job plan and travel expenses are claimable. Annual review meetings will take place in line with the new Consultant Contract, job planning and appraisal arrangements.

The Trust operates a flexible theatre cover model that may result in the successful candidate undertaking clinical sessions on alternative days and sessions to maximise OMFS theatre utilisation.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or evidence of equivalent qualification
  • BDS or equivalent
  • FRCS (OMFS) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Medical and Dental Degree
  • A post graduate qualification MSc, MD, PhD, MA, Masters in Education

Registration

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)

Desirable

  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR portfolio pathway

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
  • Sub Specialism in sialendoscopy pathway with practical knowledge and experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OMFS and ability to offer expert clinical opinions on a range of OMFS conditions, specifically in sialendoscopy
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Experience in the management, treatment and reconstruction of Head and Neck Malignancy.
  • Experience in Surgical Dermatology

Desirable

  • Evidence of sub-specialty training or fellowship out of region
  • Record of regular attendance at national specialty meetings in OMFS.

Clinical Effectiveness

  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
  • Experience of guideline appraisal
  • Participation in relevant local audits
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research

Personnel Circumstances

  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
