Join Bradford Teaching Hospitals as a Maintenance Worker and become part of our busy Estates team, helping to maintain a safe and efficient environment for patients, staff and visitors.

The successful candidate will carry out a range of maintenance duties across the Trust premises, including painting / decorating, building fabric repairs, undertake basic diagnostics and repair of faults in mechanical and electrical installations; plant and equipment, painting, building fabric; grounds and gardens maintenance and general support across all core engineering trades.

Main duties of the job

  • Represent the Estates Department and be able to communicate with service users, suppliers, contractors and own staff at all levels.
  • Carry out testing of equipment to support maintenance and service regimes in accordance with statutory and legislative requirements.
  • Carry out general duties including routine maintenance of the site grounds and premises, plant rooms and workshops, as would be associated with a busy department.
  • To carry out various maintenance duties including:
    • Problem solve/fault finding, making safe of equipment where necessary, or carry out repair.
    • Painting and decorating as required to assist the painting team.
    • Routine joinery work such as tightening fixings, minor repairs, and self-assembly of flat pack furniture, shelving etc.
    • Plumbing - such as un-blocking sinks, waste pipes and gullies.
    • Assisting the gardening team during peak demand periods such as adverse weather to ensure safe access to BTHFT premises.
    • General support across all core engineering trades.
  • Work in a variety of locations which may include working at heights above ground level on properly constructed access equipment or within confined spaces using breathing equipment or any other situation that may arise for which the appropriate training and equipment is provided.
  • Set up and operate raised platforms / access equipment, ladders, step ladders, jetter and erect scaffolding.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant relevant experience and background in the maintenance industry.
  • Experience of carrying out general building maintenance, problem solving, making safe equipment and carrying out repairs.

Skills

Essential

  • A flexible attitude, prepared to work out of hours
  • Ability to carry out manual labour for prolonged periods on a daily basis, which would include the use of appropriate lifting and handling techniques.

Desirable

  • Computer literate

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Knowledge of general building fabric maintenance / electrical / mechanical and plumbing systems and equipment. This should have been acquired through working / training within the industry.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices including safe operation of ladders, steps and scaffolding.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practice relevant to the building and engineering industry.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of engineering principles and practices.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Good standard of general education, GCSE Maths & English or equivalent.
  • Certificate in competence for working with high level access equipment or prepared to undertake
  • Certificate for erecting scaffolding. Or prepared to undertake appropriate training to gain certification.
  • Willing to undertake further training relevant to the post.
  • Hold current valid driving licence.

Desirable

  • A recognised apprenticeship in plumbing / appropriate building services engineering discipline.
  • City & Guilds - Plumbing / Building Services Engineering qualification or equivalent.

Other Requirements

Essential

  • Requirement to drive Trust vehicle.
  • Willingness to work outside during inclement weather; experience heat and humidity associated with plant such as boilers/ sewage, body fluids, gas fumes etc
