Job summary

North East Shropshire market town.

Drayton Medical Practice is looking for an enthusiastic part-time Locum GP to provide 6 sessions for maternity cover, starting w/c 12 October 2026.

Friendly, forward-thinking, progressive training practice working from a purpose-built spacious health centre 2005.

Shropshire VTS Registrars, F2 doctors and Keele University medical students.

ANP's, Physician Assistant and Pharmacists contribute a vital role in serving a diverse population of circa 18,000 patients. Minor Injuries service.

North Shropshire PCN and Partner Practice of Our Health Partnership.

EMIS total triage model. Job includes pro rata extended hours commitment.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all patients.

About us

Drayton Medical Practice has been caring for the people of Market Drayton and the surrounding area since 1968.

We have an average list size of over 18,000 patients and offer a wide range of facilities and skills while maintaining the traditional values of family medicine.

In 2005 we moved to purpose built premises that offer scope for future expansion of both services and the practice team.

In addition to being a training practice for GP trainees, we also provide placements for student Doctors, Physician Assistants and Nurses. Trainees are well supported by all members of the practice team.

Other community services located within the premises and with whom we have good links include Physiotherapy, Dental, District Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors.

We are a partner practice of Our Health Partnership, a GP partnership of 34 practices with 43 surgeries. 176 GP partners and circa 80 salaried GPs in Our Health Partnership serving around 300,000 patients in Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Wolverhampton, Solihull and Shropshire.

Our Health Partnership was set up by local GPs who are passionate about providing high quality primary care and using their time and skills effectively to benefit patients.

We are a member practice of North Shropshire Primary Care Network (PCN), a network of GP practices covering Oswestry, Ellesmere, Whitchurch, Wem, Prees, Hodnet and Market Drayton.

Job responsibilities

In accordance with the practice timetable the post-holder will make themselves available to undertake a variety of duties, including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, home visits, dealing with repeat prescriptions, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion

Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation

Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems

Developing care plans for health in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols

Collecting data for audit purposes

Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary

In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully qualified GP with GMC registration
  • Inclusion on the NHS England performers list

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Experience of continued professional development
  • Experience of QOF and clinical audit
  • General understanding of the GMS contract
