Job summary

The nutrition support nurse plays a vital role within the multidisciplinary Nutrition Support Team, at St Mark's hospital. This post provides support to the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Consultant in providing specialist knowledge and input surrounding the safe and effective delivery of nutrition support (oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition) for inpatients, and outpatients receiving home parenteral and enteral nutrition. There is a large patient teaching component training patients to administer their home parenteral nutrition and care for their central venous catheter.

Main duties of the job

Under the guidance of the Clinical Nurse Specialists/Nurse Consultant the support nurse will;

Facilitate nursing practice, education and advice within the speciality of nutrition support.

Promote and monitor the implementation of clinical guidelines relating to nutrition support.

Review inpatients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition

Train patients for home enteral and parenteral nutrition.

Review home enteral and parenteral nutrition patients in the nurse led rapid access clinic

Co-ordinate the safe discharge of patients on home enteral and parenteral nutrition.

Ensure the safe aftercare of devices used for artificial nutrition support (enteral and parenteral nutrition).

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered nurse adult
  • Valid NMC registration
  • Teaching experience

Desirable

  • Attendance at nutrition support and/or intestinal rehabilitation conference/meeting

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Understanding of gastrointestinal conditions
  • Understanding of intestinal failure and the common causes of type 3 intestinal failure
  • Knowledge of artificial feeding routes and techniques
  • Post registration experience of caring for patients receiving artificial nutrition
  • Experience of handling central venous access devices ; non tunnelled, PICC, tunnelled cuffed, and totally implanted port

Desirable

  • Understanding of how home parenteral nutrition is organised
  • Experience of reviewing outpatients with artificial nutrition support related complications
  • Experience of facilitating a patient helpline - recording, triaging and responding to patient concerns

Skill, abilities and attributes

Essential

  • Proficient in Aseptic Non Touch Technique ( ANTT)
  • Experience in teaching central venous catheter care
  • Good time management
  • Good standard of oral and written communication
  • Phelebotomy and cannulation

Desirable

  • Experience of MDT working
  • Proficient in the use of MS teams
