About Us:
Envar is a producer and supplier of high-quality soil improver, woodland garden mulch, wood chip and biomass. We operate green waste composting sites across England with sites in Surrey, Northamptonshire, West London, Essex, Kent and Suffolk as well as our flagship site in Cambridgeshire where we also process food waste. In addition to composting Envar also recycle coffee grounds.
About the role:
The Plant Manager is responsible for leading the engineering and maintenance function across the site, ensuring all plant, machinery and fixed assets are adequately maintained, safe to use and available when required. A step change in business direction is to focus on preventative maintenance which is driving the need for the role.
The Plant Manager will work closely with site managers and operational leaders to ensure engineering activities support business objectives, production targets and compliance requirements.
The role will be a combination of both office and on the tools to which we expect to be a 35% / 65% split. It requires someone with a get stuck in attitude who is not afraid to work in dirty, dusty environments and takes pride in their work.
Responsibilities:
Engineering Leadership:
Lead and develop the Plant/Engineering team across the facility
Establish clear engineering standards, procedures and performance expectations
Build a preventative maintenance culture focused on reliability and continuous improvement
Provide coaching, mentoring and technical support to engineering personnel
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, reliability and productivity
Asset Management:
Ensure preventative maintenance programmes are planned, executed and continuously improved
Maintain an accurate asset register and lifecycle management programme
Monitor plant performance and implement corrective actions to improve reliability
Maintenance Management & Contractors:
Manage all planned, preventative and reactive maintenance activities
Minimise equipment downtime through effective maintenance scheduling
Ensure maintenance records are completed and maintained accurately
Analyse breakdown trends and drive root cause investigations
Manage external service providers and engineering contractors
Ensure contractor compliance with company policies and site procedures
Monitor contractor performance against agreed standards
Health, Safety and Compliance:
Ensure all engineering activities comply with health and safety legislation and company procedures
Support safe systems of work including permits, lockout/tagout procedures and contractor management
Conduct engineering risk assessments and ensure corrective actions are completed
Support compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements
Capital Projects and Continuous Improvement:
Advise on engineering improvement and capital investment projects
Oversee installation, commissioning and handover of new assets
Deliver projects on time and within budget
Implement engineering KPIs and performance reporting
Utilise data to identify trends, risks and opportunities
Promote innovation and best practice across all sites
About you:
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
Proven experience in engineering management within waste management, recycling, processing, manufacturing, aggregates, quarrying or heavy industry
Strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems
Competent at diagnosing problems with machines with the ability to carry out repairs such as, welding, bearing and motor changes, servicing, basic electrics
Experience managing maintenance teams and contractors
Excellent communication and leadership abilities
Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering.
Engineering management qualification.
IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.
Experience with CMMS maintenance management systems.
Knowledge of mobile plant including loading shovels, excavators, telehandlers, shredders, screens, trommels and conveyors.
