Principal Consultant – ICT & Security (Buildings & Infrastructure)

A leading built environment consultancy is looking for a Principal Consultant to join its Buildings & Infrastructure practice, sitting within a small specialist ICT & Security team inside a wider multidisciplinary Cities & Places group. The team works horizontally across water, transport, cities, defence and critical infrastructure.

Ensure all your application information is up to date and in order before applying for this opportunity.

This is a technical role, taking ownership of complex ICT and security design across major infrastructure projects — with scope to grow into mentoring and technical management as the practice expands.

What's in it for you:

  • Take technical ownership of complex, secure infrastructure projects across major UK sectors
  • Work across a genuinely varied portfolio — defence, critical infrastructure, water, transport, cities
  • Build toward a technical leadership track, mentoring and shaping delivery standards in a growing specialist team

Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical design and delivery of ICT and security solutions across building and infrastructure projects, feasibility through to handover (RIBA stages)
  • Provide technical oversight for secure communications and building ICT systems
  • Coordinate and integrate security solutions across complex infrastructure environments
  • Work across multidisciplinary teams — architecture, engineering, infrastructure
  • Mentor junior team members, maintaining technical quality and delivery standards
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications and design outputs
  • Support project work across defence, critical infrastructure, water and transport (rail excluded where possible)
  • Input into proposals and client briefs from a technical standpoint as needed

Must Have:

  • Experience with ICT systems for buildings and infrastructure environments
  • Strong background in telecommunications, building services or infrastructure engineering design
  • Experience in secure environments (defence or critical infrastructure)
  • Eligible for UK Security Clearance (or current/previous SC)
  • Strong grasp of integrated building ICT and security systems
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams
  • Able to produce technical documentation — reports, specifications, design outputs

Systems knowledge:

  • Data communications and networking
  • Secure/non-secure communications systems
  • Structured cabling and telecoms infrastructure
  • CCTV and video surveillance
  • Access control and intruder detection
  • Perimeter and physical security (barriers, fencing, xwzovoh HVM)
  • Datacentre (Not required by advantageous)

Also:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline
  • Professional membership (or working towards) desirable
  • Good communication skills for working across technical and multidisciplinary teams

Benefits:

  • Hybrid working — typically 2–3 days office-based, flexible arrangements available
  • London, Manchester, Birmingham or Bristol
  • Genuine focus on work-life balance
  • Exposure to high-security, nationally significant infrastructure projects
  • Structured progression into senior technical leadership roles
  • Support for professional development and memberships
  • Inclusive, collaborative multidisciplinary environment

Salary: £80,000 – £100,000 per annum, depending on experience
