Contractor We are seeking an experienced
Product Range Design Engineer
to join a busy engineering environment on an initial
12-month contract . The role will focus on the
development, improvement and expansion of product ranges , working from technical data sheets, engineering specifications, existing designs and customer requirements. The successful contractor will ideally have experience within
food processing, food manufacturing or process engineering , with a strong understanding of engineering drawings, P&IDs and technical documentation. Key Responsibilities
Develop and expand existing
product ranges
in line with customer and engineering requirements. Review and work from
technical data sheets, specifications and engineering documentation . Interpret and understand
P&IDs, process diagrams and engineering drawings . Develop and modify designs based on existing engineering standards and specifications. Review existing products and identify opportunities for
design improvements, standardisation and range development . Produce and update technical design documentation and associated product information. Work closely with engineering and project teams to ensure designs meet the required specifications. Coordinate with third-party designers and suppliers where required. Review externally produced design information and ensure it aligns with technical requirements. Support the transfer of technical and design information between internal teams and external parties. Attend site visits where required to understand existing equipment, installations and customer requirements. Carry out site measurements and use existing site information to support product development. Review 3D design information and visual content produced using
SolidWorks
or similar CAD software. Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and suitable for use within process and food manufacturing environments. Maintain accurate technical documentation and records of design changes. Essential Experience
Previous experience as a
Design Engineer, Product Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer or similar . Proven experience developing, modifying or improving
engineered products or product ranges . Strong ability to work from
technical data sheets, specifications and engineering documentation . Good understanding of
P&IDs and process diagrams . Ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings. Strong mechanical engineering knowledge. Excellent attention to detail, particularly when working to technical specifications. Experience working with external designers, suppliers or engineering partners. Strong communication and coordination skills. Desirable Experience
Food processing or food manufacturing experience . Previous experience working with major food manufacturing clients such as
Nestlé or Weetabix Experience using or interpreting
SolidWorks
models and 3D design content. Experience within
process engineering
environments. Understanding of
hygienic design
and equipment used within food processing applications. The Ideal Contractor
This role would suit an experienced designer who enjoys
product development and range expansion , rather than purely project-based design work. You will need to be technically strong, commercially aware and confident working from specifications and engineering information. A key part of the role will be understanding how individual products fit into wider process systems and being able to interpret
P&IDs, drawings and technical documentation . You should also be comfortable reviewing design information produced by third parties, identifying discrepancies or improvements and ensuring the finished design meets the required specification. The ability to work independently as a contractor, manage your own workload and communicate effectively with engineering teams, designers and suppliers will be important. Contract Details
