Quality Engineer, Commercial Vehicles

Permanent or Contract Our commercial vehicle client based in Motherwell is urgently looking for a suitably qualified Quality Engineer on either a permanent or contract basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that commercial vehicles and components meet customer, company, and regulatory quality requirements. The role will involve developing and maintaining quality systems, analyzing manufacturing processes, resolving quality issues, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring compliance with industry standards throughout the manufacturing process. Key Responsibilities of the role Develop, implement, and maintain quality control plans, inspection standards, and testing procedures. Monitor product quality throughout manufacturing and assembly processes. Investigate customer complaints, warranty claims, and internal quality issues using structured problem-solving methodologies. Perform root cause analysis using tools such as 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, and Pareto Analysis. Lead corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities and verify their effectiveness. Conduct process audits, product audits, and layered process audits. Ensure compliance with Quality Management Systems such as IATF 16949 and ISO 9001. Support APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, and MSA activities for new product development. Analyze quality data and prepare reports on defects, rework, scrap, and customer quality performance. Collaborate with Production, Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, and Supplier Quality teams to resolve quality concerns. Participate in supplier development and supplier quality improvement initiatives. Ensure calibration and maintenance of inspection and measuring equipment. Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles. Train production personnel on quality standards, inspection methods, and quality awareness. Support internal, customer, and third-party quality audits. Required/ Expected Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline. 3+ years of experience in quality engineering within the automotive, commercial vehicle or industrial manufacturing sector. Knowledge of industrial quality standards including IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and relevant customer-specific requirements. Experience with APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, MSA, and Control Plans. Familiarity with GD&T, engineering drawings, and inspection techniques. Good understanding of welding, machining, fabrication, painting, and vehicle assembly processes. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and quality data analysis tools. Beneficial Preferred Skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. Experience with ERP systems and quality management software. Strong attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Right First Time (RTF) Customer complaints and warranty performance Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) Scrap and rework reduction Corrective action closure effectiveness Supplier quality performance Internal and external audit compliance Process capability (Cp/Cpk) On-time completion of quality improvement projects Working Conditions Manufacturing plant environment with regular shop floor activities.
