Science Technician (Technician 2- Biology and Chemistry)

Contract Type: Term time, Permanent
Responsible to: Heads of Biology and Chemistry
Salary Scale: Point 11-14 (£28,142-29,540 pro rata) on the NJC Scale
Hours of Duty: 32.5 hours per week- Monday to Friday: working times to be agreed on appointment. The role is for 40 weeks (which includes two weeks in the summer break).
Additional Information: 

Candidates will be expected to work on canteen till for 30 minutes per day 
as part of the role, during lunchtime

JOB PURPOSE

To provide technical support and assistance to teaching staff in the implementation of the Science Department's educational programme, in accordance with the practice and procedures of Rainey Endowed 
School.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provision and Maintenance of Facilities and Practical Resources 

  • Assist teaching staff in developing and manufacturing teaching aids and practical tasks.
  • Prepare resources for all classes including setting up, testing, demonstrating and dismantling suitable resources as per agreed schemes of work.
  • Set out equipment and materials for class use and remove same when class is complete.
  • Collect, clean and store all equipment and materials securely in designated storage areas. Ensure items are maintained in a state of 'ready for use'.
  • Dispose of used materials in a safe and approved manner.
  • Ensure that mandatory and/or statutory checks of materials and equipment are carried out by qualified personnel. 
  • Inform the Head of Department of materials and equipment found to be in an unsatisfactory/unsafe condition and arrange for repair and disposal of such items.
  • Manage access to equipment and materials when not in use.
  • Advise on health and safety issues in relation to the use of chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist with the care of small animal/ reptile collection of the school and facilitate the popular Animal Club.
  • Facilitate engagement with STEM-related competitions, clubs and outreach activities in the community.
