Job Description

Senior Development Planner – support the regional Development Team in Edinburgh or Glasgow specialising in Transport/Civil Engineering for Development Planning. Responsibilities include providing sustainable development solutions, advising client on residential and mixed‑use projects, delivering concept studies, transport assessments, parking studies, and managing projects through the planning process. Reports to a senior member of the Development Team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day support in delivering concept studies, transport statements, transport assessments, travel plans, parking studies, access studies, and movement and access studies, leading to planning applications.
  • Ensure client and colleague relationships are collaborative and harmonious.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with key clients, delivering high levels of technical competence and client satisfaction.
  • Keep up‑to‑date with relevant standards and policies; raise company profile by networking and attending conferences.
  • Guide and support technical staff of various grades.
  • Engage in high‑profile client engagement, stakeholder management, design team liaison and project management.
  • Deliver projects on budget, programme, technical standards, and legal requirements.

Qualifications

  • Numerate first degree in Transport, Mathematics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Planning or a related subject.
  • Experience leading client contact for consultancy services and fostering excellent client relationships.
  • Strong communication skills and track record of presenting compelling written work.
  • Knowledge of transport planning guidance and best practice.
  • Significant experience delivering a wide range of transport planning projects across specialist areas such as development planning, scheme delivery, sustainable transport and active travel, junction design, and relevant standards.
  • Working knowledge of junction modelling software (e.g., Junctions 9, PICADY, ARCADY, Linsig) and ability to mentor others.
  • High level of numeracy with problem‑solving skills and innovative thinking.
  • Experience financially and programme managing projects using appropriate business tools.
  • Experience in team management, including line management and day‑to‑day operations.
  • Robust knowledge of financial and contractual aspects of planning, bidding, and project delivery.
  • Postgraduate experience and nearing chartership or equivalent commercial experience and responsibility.
