Data Analysis and Interpretation
Independently interpret and analyse complex, multi-source datasets, identifying trends, anomalies, and implications for public health policy and service delivery. Exercise professional judgement to select and apply appropriate analytical methods, balancing statistical rigour with practical constraints and stakeholder needs. Adapt national or standardised models to local datasets and service contexts, enhancing analytical relevance and impact. Understand and manage missing or incomplete data, applying appropriate techniques to ensure analytical integrity. Plan for iterative analysis, incorporating feedback and emerging priorities to refine outputs and maximise value. Apply the six dimensions of data quality to assess and communicate limitations in interpretation, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness.
Technical Tools and software
Use advanced analytical tools such as R, Python, SQL, and Google Cloud Platform to develop efficient, reproducible workflows. Lead the development of analytical pipelines, applying good practice in software development, testing, version control, and documentation. Select the most appropriate tools for each task, demonstrating flexibility and technical leadership across projects. Ensure compliance with platform-specific security protocols and contribute to the development of secure, scalable analytical environments. Engage with the wider analytical community to stay current with emerging tools, techniques, and standards.
Data Quality and Governance
Oversee data governance processes, ensuring datasets used in public health analysis are secure, accessible, and fit for purpose. Handle sensitive data in compliance with NHS information governance standards, using secure platforms for access and sharing. Maintain metadata and documentation to support reproducibility and auditability of analytical work. Identify and resolve data quality issues, including missing, inconsistent, or duplicated records, using systematic cleansing and validation techniques. Apply statistical disclosure control and de-identification methods to protect confidentiality in outputs. Raise data quality or governance concerns promptly and appropriately, contributing to continuous improvement in data management practices.
Operational and Organisation Responsibilities
Lead the planning and delivery of analytical projects using Agile methodology, managing timelines, resources, and stakeholder inputs to ensure outputs meet strategic objectives. Align analytical work with organisational priorities, adapting plans in response to emerging public health issues and evolving stakeholder needs. Produce outputs that inform decision making in relation to policy, resource allocation and service delivery. Provide analysis of registration data to understand patterns of disease and conditions in the population, and the effectiveness of interventions with public health interpretation. Maintain and update datasets, metadata, and documentation in line with governance and audit standards. Ensure analytical outputs are stored and shared securely, respecting confidentiality and data protection requirements. Take responsibility for the safe use and maintenance of IT equipment and analytical software tools.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
Present complex public health intelligence to senior stakeholders, tailoring communication to technical and non-technical audiences for clarity and impact. Facilitate stakeholder workshops to co-design analytical solutions, resolve conflicting priorities, and ensure outputs are user-centred. Communicate openly and honestly, including when delivering sensitive or challenging messages, demonstrating emotional resilience and professionalism. Translate technical concepts into accessible language, deliver formal presentations, and comply with accessibility standards for data visualisation and reporting. Use politically neutral language and adapt communication style to suit diverse audiences and contexts. Collaborate creatively and proactively with stakeholders to solve analytical challenges and deliver actionable insights.
Leadership, Mentoring and Professional Development
Provide technical leadership across analytical projects, setting standards for reproducibility, quality assurance, and governance. Mentor and train junior analysts, supporting their development through coaching, onboarding, and skills transfer. Contribute to team planning, recruitment, and performance management activities, including appraisals and personal development plans. Promote professional values and demonstrate compassion and support for colleagues. Identify personal development needs and seek learning opportunities, sharing knowledge and best practice across the team and wider networks. Engage with organisational and professional communities of practice, contributing to the development of analytical standards and promoting ethical, high-quality analysis.
