Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic doctor to join the Postgraduate Medical Education Department at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals as a Simulation Fellow. This role will support the design, development, delivery and evaluation of simulation-based education across postgraduate medical and dental training. The post holder will work closely with the Medical Education Technology Team, senior education faculty, postgraduate doctors, multidisciplinary colleagues and specialty teams to strengthen simulation provision across the Trust. The role will include supporting existing simulation programmes, developing in-situ and skills-based training, contributing to faculty development, and helping shape a Trust-wide simulation strategy aligned to education, patient safety and workforce development priorities. This is an excellent opportunity for a doctor with an interest in medical education, simulation and innovation to gain valuable experience in educational leadership, curriculum development, multidisciplinary working and quality improvement. The post is suitable for an out of programme experience and offers opportunities to work with regional colleagues, share best practice, and present or publish educational work.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve supporting faculty development, helping produce effective training materials, maintaining accurate records of simulation activity, and contributing to local and regional simulation networks. The post holder will also be expected to support innovation in simulation and digital learning technologies, while ensuring training is inclusive, multidisciplinary and aligned to service needs.

Job responsibilities

This post will also include one day supernumerary clinical work in a specialty to be discussed at interview.

Key duties will include developing a gap-analysis of simulation activities, supporting existing simulation programmes, developing in-situ and skills-based training, contributing to the Trust-wide simulation strategy, and working with specialties to design relevant scenarios that meet departmental training needs.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience
  • ALS (Advanced Life Support)
  • Competence in basic Clinical Procedures
  • Registered with GMC and has MBBS/Eq
  • Satisfactory completion of Foundation Year 1 and Foundation Year 2 post or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Teaching experience or teaching qualification
  • Simulation Train the trainer qualification
  • Instructor status in one or more life support courses

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and skill
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Able to teach clinical skills
  • Familiar with simulation based teaching
  • Strategic thinker with an enquiring, critical approach to work
  • Open to new ideas; willing to learn and develop
  • Understanding of current NHS pressures

Desirable

  • Minimum 12 months in the NHS
