We're looking for a Technical Training Lead to join our Rail UK Training & Competence team and play a pivotal role in building the next generation of technical capability across our UK fleets.
This is more than a training role. It's an opportunity to create a lasting legacy by developing industry-leading technical learning programmes that support the safe operation, maintenance and continual improvement of modern rolling stock.
About the Role As Technical Training Lead, you will be at the forefront of technical learning and workforce development, designing and delivering innovative training solutions that ensure our operational teams have the skills, knowledge and confidence to perform at the highest level.
Working closely with the Training & Competence Manager, engineering specialists, project teams and customers, you will develop a centralised technical training framework that supports multiple fleets and operational projects across the UK.
From vehicle familiarisation and advanced system training to digital learning content and competency development, your work will have a direct impact on operational excellence, safety and performance.
What You'll Be Doing Design World-Class Technical Training Develop and implement a centralised technical training framework across UK operations.
Create engaging training programmes covering: Traction systems
Braking systems
Control systems
Signalling interfaces
Maintenance and overhaul procedures
Vehicle familiarisation
Build and maintain a comprehensive technical training library.
Develop innovative e-learning solutions, multimedia resources and blended learning programmes.
Collaborate with engineering experts, project teams and industry partners to create high-quality learning content.
Drive Workforce Capability Lead technical skills gap analyses across operational teams.
Identify future workforce capability requirements.
Support the development of competency frameworks and technical career pathways.
Help shape learning strategies that support both business objectives and employee development.
Improve Performance Through Learning Monitor technical incidents and operational trends to identify training opportunities.
Develop targeted learning interventions that address performance and competency gaps.
Ensure training remains relevant to emerging technologies, customer needs and operational challenges.
Champion Continuous Improvement Evaluate training effectiveness through feedback, assessments and performance data.
Review and update learning content to ensure alignment with industry standards and best practice.
Promote innovative learning methodologies and modern training technologies.
What We're Looking For Essential ? Level 3 qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
? Level 4 teaching/training qualification (such as CTLLS) or Level 3 qualification with significant proven experience
? Experience designing and delivering technical training programmes
? Strong instructional design capability and experience using digital authoring tools
? Proven experience delivering training within the rail industry or another technically complex, highly regulated sector
? Strong understanding of rolling stock systems, including:
Traction
Braking
Signalling
Train control systems
? Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
? Knowledge of competency-based training and assessment frameworks
? Understanding of relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements
Desirable ? Level 4 Engineering qualification
? Workplace Assessor qualifications such as:
CAVA
A1
D32/D33
NVQ Assessor
