Job summary

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team within the Adult Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital, providing advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and decision-making for patients presenting with undifferentiated and often complex healthcare needs.

The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with ACPs working across a rotational shift pattern comprising:

• 07:30 - 17:30
• 14:00 - 00:00
• 22:00 - 08:00

ACPs work autonomously within their scope of practice whilst contributing to the wider emergency care team, supporting patient flow, timely clinical decision-making, and high-quality patient care across all areas of the department.

The qualified ACP role is appointed at Agenda for Change Band 8a following successful completion of a Level 7 Advanced Clinical Practice programme and demonstration of the four pillars of advanced practice through a comprehensive portfolio of clinical and workplace-based assessments.

The Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (TACP) role is appointed at Agenda for Change Band 7 for the duration of training. Progression to Band 8a is subject to successful completion of both the academic programme and the required portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence in advanced clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

The ACP role within the Adult Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital offers a rewarding opportunity to combine advanced autonomous clinical practice with leadership, education, quality improvement and research.

ACPs work across all areas of the Emergency Department, including Resuscitation, Majors, Ambulatory Care and Ambulance Receiving/Triage. They assess, diagnose, treat and manage patients with undifferentiated and complex healthcare needs, working autonomously within their scope of practice while collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team.

The role provides exposure to a diverse patient population and supports the development of advanced expertise in Emergency Medicine. ACPs play a key role in delivering timely, high-quality, patient-centred care and supporting patient flow throughout the department.

Alongside clinical duties, ACPs contribute to all four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice through education, leadership, service development, quality improvement and research. Protected non-clinical time supports continuing professional development, supervision, teaching and project work.

Successful applicants will join an established ACP workforce with opportunities for ongoing professional development, including RCEM Credentialing following completion of MSc Advanced Clinical Practice training and attainment of substantive ACP status.

Education

Essential

• Current professional registration with the NMC, HCPC, GPhC or equivalent
• Evidence of continuing professional development e.g. post-graduate diploma-level study, accredited short courses relevant to speciality
• Educated to degree-level in a relevant healthcare discipline

Desirable

• Teaching or clinical supervision qualification
• Completion of one or more modules contributing to the MSc in Advanced Practice
• Eligible to undertake a non-medical prescribing programme

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

• Significant post-registration clinical experience ( in relevant setting, emergency or urgent care / acute care) , including time spent in a relevant leadership, or enhanced practice role
• Highly developed clinical knowledge and skills including assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and evaluation of care

Desirable

• Responsibility for education, research or quality improvement activity
