The Opportunity We are working with a leading plant hire business based in Hemel Hempstead who are looking for an experienced Service Manager to take ownership of a busy and high-performing service operation.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on Service Manager who enjoys leading from the front, managing people, improving performance and ensuring a large fleet remains operational, compliant and ready to meet customer demand.
You will be responsible for managing a fleet of approximately 1,200 units and leading a team of around 25 fitters and mobile engineers, ensuring the service department operates safely, efficiently and effectively.
This role would suit an experienced Service Manager from a plant hire, construction equipment, heavy engineering or similar environment who thrives in a fast-paced operational setting.
Key Responsibilities As Service Manager , you will be responsible for:
Taking full ownership of the service department and driving performance daily
Leading, motivating and developing a team of fitters and engineers
Managing servicing, inspections, repairs and breakdown response across a large fleet
Ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard and available to meet customer requirements
Working closely with the Workshop Supervisor and wider operational teams
Reducing downtime and improving service efficiency
Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and cost savings
Maintaining high standards of health & safety, compliance and quality
Delivering team briefings and toolbox talks to ensure clear communication
Supporting a positive and productive engineering culture
What we are looking for We are looking for an experienced Service Manager with:
Previous experience managing a service, workshop or engineering operation
A background within plant hire, construction equipment, heavy engineering or a similar environment
Experience leading and developing engineering teams, fitters or mobile engineers
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
A proactive, hands-on approach with excellent problem-solving ability
The confidence to make decisions and drive improvements in a busy environment
Strong understanding of maintenance, servicing and compliance requirements
Experience with plant equipment and an NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance (or equivalent) would be advantageous.
