Job summary

This Assistant Technical Officer post offers an exciting opportunity to develop your laboratory skills. As a Band 3 Assistant Technical Officer, you will participate in the laboratory testing procedures and provide technical support to Scientific staff within the Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology department.

We are an IBMS accredited training laboratory committed to education, training and clinical excellence. We offer excellent training programmes for IBMS registration and specialist portfolios and beyond. Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for receipt of pathology specimens and preparation for analysis. Also you will be running the analysers, including completing any required maintenance and processing patients samples, under the guidance of Biomedical Scientists. You will assist in training staff within the department.

Job responsibilities

The Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology laboratory at Peterborough City Hospital is part of the recently formed North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. Peterborough, the green city of the East of England, offers a thriving city with a rich history and very affordable living. Peterborough also boasts excellent transport links. There are regular trains to London and have easy access to Cambridge, and the rest of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

You will also need to be enthusiastic, highly motivated, flexible and have good attention to detail. The ideal candidate will also be computer literate and familiar with working to ISO15189 standards. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in a rota which provides extended hours support for the laboratory service.

Qualification

Essential

  • Educated to a minimum of GCSE or equivalent including science

Desirable

  • NVQ or equivalent in laboratory or science discipline
Skills

Essential

  • Ability to type accurately and efficiently
  • Self-motivated and able to work within a team culture

Desirable

  • Competent in the use of MS Outlook/ MS Word and Excel
Knowledge

Essential

  • Good general education
  • Good standards of written and verbal communication
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in a Clinical Biochemistry and /or Immunology laboratory.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management systems (LIMS)
  • Awareness of the profession and its function

  • Able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trusts values and behaviours.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK
  • Ability to travel within locality on occasions and work cross site within the Trust.
