Job summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and experienced Midwife to join our senior midwifery leadership team. This exciting opportunity will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of exceptional maternity care across our services at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

As Matron, you will provide operational and professional leadership across the Delivery Suite, Triage and Birth Centre. Reporting to the Head of Midwifery, you will be a key member of the senior leadership team, driving high standards of clinical care, patient experience, safety and service delivery.

The successful candidate will be an autonomous, compassionate and visible leader, with a flexible and responsive approach. You will work collaboratively across the organisation and wider healthcare system to deliver safe, high-quality and personalised maternity care that reflects the diverse needs of our communities.

Our maternity services have recently achieved a CQC rating of Good, reflecting the significant progress made by our teams. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our ongoing improvement journey, building on this achievement while continuing to strengthen quality, safety, experience and outcomes for women, babies and families.

This 12-month secondment or fixed-term opportunity offers an excellent opportunity for an aspiring or established senior midwifery leader to develop their leadership experience within a forward-thinking, supportive and ambitious team.

Main duties of the job

To provide day-to-day operational and professional leadership and management in the clinical areas, ensuring all teams work collaboratively to deliver integrated care.

To enable a culture of learning, effectiveness and continuous improvement.

To advocate for excellent patient care, ensuring this is fundamental to all clinical decision-making.

To assist in the development of guidelines, policies and procedures relating to performance, risk management, recruitment and retention.

To be accountable for budget and financial targets within the area of responsibility.

To promote high standards of infection prevention and control compliance, health and safety.

To provide assurance that investigations into patient care and complaints lead to systematic changes where required, and that changes in practice are actively monitored and sustained.

To ensure own practice and that of others upholds the NMC/HCPC Codes of Practice.

To participate in the operational management and running of the maternity service, including cross-site working where required, to ensure effective and responsive leadership across the service.

To participate in the 24-hour on-call Maternity Manager system, providing senior operational leadership, advice and support to clinical teams when required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Adult / Child / Midwife NMC Registered Practitioner ( HCPC Registered Operating Department Practitioner dependent upon post )
  • *Evidence of post registration professional knowledge acquired through Diploma / Degree or above supplemented by specialist training or equivalent experience to masters level equivalent
  • *Evidence of recent post-graduate / qualification professional development

Desirable

  • *Evidence of accredited management / leadership training or evidence of practical application of expertise at this level
  • *Teaching and assessing qualification
Experience

Essential

  • *A proven track record of operational service management at a Band 7(or equivalent) or above, in an acute NHS provider healthcare setting manging a ward / service/ department. Including staff, financial/budgetary and change management.
  • *Experienced operational service manager familiar with managing / delivering patient services within acute patient services ( scheduled and unscheduled care provider)
  • *Proven ability to analyse complex problems; develop and implement practical/cost effective sustainable solutions to address them. Incorporating the Trust values.
  • *Is able to articulate a clear understanding of current issues in clinical practice related to the role/ speciality applied for and is able to apply National and Trust Policy to practice
  • *Ability to think and plan strategically and tactically; whilst prioritising workloads in complex challenging and competitive environment.
  • *Demonstrate a strong sense of personal and collective accountability; with a precise understanding of boundaries around delegated authority.
  • *The ability to collaborate constructively, with internal and external stakeholders. Creating an environment and culture for successful Partnership Working.
  • *Ability to understand how innovation and research, can impact on (1) patient care and experience (2) workforce recruitment and retention (3) Trust finances and reputation.
  • *Experienced in the investigation and production of reports / action plans for clinical and human resource related incidents / professional issues.
  • *A good understanding of the NHS changing environment e.g., current concerns, initiatives and can relate this to the role applied for Current professional and health service priorities
