Main duties of the job

The Clinical Lead role bridges clinical practice and hospital operations by providing specialty-specific leadership and expert advice to managers and senior leaders. You will be responsible for coordinating your departments clinical, educational, professional and strategic activities, maintaining oversight of quality and safety, and supporting the ongoing development of medical colleagues. You will also provide visible leadership to the West Essex clinical community to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes and reduce health inequalities.

Job responsibilities

Scope and range

Responsible for working with all clinical and operational staff within their department, supporting them to provide high-quality services.

Visible across the West Essex health and care system.

Duties and responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Advisory

Provide specialty-specific clinical advice to the Divisional Medical Director, Operational Managers, and Trust Executives to inform operational and corporate decisions and future service planning.

Contribute to the development and delivery of departmental and divisional strategic objectives, aligned to Trust priorities and NHS England guidance.

Act as the senior clinical representative in relevant business cases, transformation projects, and capital investment planning.

Lead the development and delivery of clinical services through vertical and horizontal integration.

Quality and Safety

  • Oversee clinical quality, patient safety, and risk management in the department.
  • Monitor clinical performance indicators, incident reporting, complaints, and patient experience feedback.
  • Ensure leadership is available for clinical audit, mortality and morbidity reviews, and clinical governance meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with national clinical standards and contribute to CQC readiness and responses.

Medical Leadership & Line Management

Provide day-to-day professional leadership and line management for the department medical workforce, and plan for effective job planning, appraisal and revalidation, and rota oversight.

Support recruitment, induction, and retention of medical staff.

Promote a culture of open communication, professional support, and continuous improvement.

Departmental Coordination

  • Coordinate departmental activities, including clinical service delivery, postgraduate education, workforce planning, and service development.
  • Foster multidisciplinary collaboration and ensure effective working relationships with nursing, allied health professionals, and management teams.
  • Represent the department at relevant hospital and external forums.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration with a licence to practice
Experience

Essential

  • Emerging leadership experience or demonstrable evidenced interest in service improvement
  • Experience supervising trainees and contributing to teaching
  • Competent autonomous practitioner in the relevant specialty, with evidence of delivering high quality care
