Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced RMN to join Bevan Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as a part-time Clinical Practice Lead.

Bevan PICU provides intensive care and treatment for men experiencing acute and complex mental health difficulties. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team, supporting safe, compassionate and recovery-focused care in a challenging and dynamic environment.

A key focus of the role is least restrictive practice, with the post holder supporting therapeutic engagement, de-escalation and trauma-informed approaches to reduce restrictive interventions and promote patient dignity, choice and recovery.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide effective Band 6 clinical leadership and support to the nursing team.

  • Support the safe management of patients with acute and complex mental health needs.

  • Lead and promote least restrictive practice, reducing the use of restraint, seclusion and other restrictive interventions.

  • Support staff with de-escalation, therapeutic engagement and trauma-informed care.

  • Ensure restrictive interventions, where required, are proportionate, safely managed, documented, reviewed and followed by appropriate debriefing.

  • Contribute to assessment, care planning, risk management and multidisciplinary working.

  • Provide clinical support, supervision and guidance to junior staff.

  • Contribute to quality improvement, particularly around patient safety, experience and reducing restrictive practice.

  • Maintain competence in Safety Intervention and support the safe management of violence and aggression.

  • Act as a positive role model, promoting high standards of professional and compassionate care.

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Mental Health)
  • Mentorship certification
  • Completion of Preceptorship
Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience at band 5 level or above
  • Working with people with mental health problems
  • Managing challenging and aggressive behaviour
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Experience of providing individualized and culturally sensitive care

Desirable

  • Supporting and supervising students and junior staff
Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for complex patients
  • Minimising clinical risk and reducing restrictive practices
  • Able to work systematically and objectively in an environment with patients who can present high risk behaviours
  • Able to manage time so that deadlines are met
