Job summary

We are looking for a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our critical care, surgical and respiratory team. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual who can demonstrate forward thinking, is open to provide clinical expertise, leadership and support skills to provide holistic occupational therapy assessments and treatments. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop self and others within this role.

The successful post holder will have experience and clinical specialist occupational therapy skills working with a range of conditions, including deteriorating conditions across the critical care, surgical and respiratory patient cohorts.

The successful post holder will work to embed the role of specialist occupational therapy skills and support within an integrated service.

The successful post holder will be able to provide specialist skills to long term and complex patients within these cohorts.

Main duties of the job

- To support the operational management of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy staff working within the team, including supervision, annual appraisal, training and general support.

- To deal with issues relating to performance management (in consultation with Human resources and the Lead Therapist) to effectively manage staff within the clinical team.

- The post holder will ensure effective stock control and use of resources to support budget management. This includes reviewing staff resources and skill mix to meet service needs. The post holder assumes responsibility for the day-to-day management of the clinical area.

Job responsibilities

- To exercise a high degree of professional autonomy, creating and developing protocols/guidelines for the management of patients. To make recommendations regarding national guidelines, initiatives and research. Lead best practice using validated assessment tools and review of intervention outcomes to ensure a high-quality evidence-based service is provided

- To lead audit and service evaluation, to further own and teams clinical practice and service development. To be involved in making recommendations for changes to practice and procedures for the relevant clinical area, and the implementation of these changes.

- To participate in strategic planning, policy development and implementation in order to maintain and achieve national and local targets. To prepare proposals for service development /improvement for presentation to the Trust Management Board. To be innovative and proactive managing change, to respond to the demands of the financial situation and the modernisation agenda. To contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda by active participation in service initiatives, health and safety and risk management.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Completed or working towards completion of relevant post-graduate study and experience of working at a senior level in this specialist area.

Desirable

  • Valid UK driving license
Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in the NHS in the UK
  • Relevant specialist experience in Critical Care, Surgery and Respiratory specialty and proven leadership experience.
  • Experience of providing education and supervision to staff and students.
Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Proven negotiation/communication skills
  • The ability to operationally manage a service area including evaluation and making change as required.
  • The ability to manage change and conflict to ensure resolutions with positive outcomes.
