This post is for a Consultant in Histopathology.
For substantive roles, applicants must have full GMC registration and either hold or be within six months of a CCT in Histopathology. International applicants must demonstrate equivalence to a UK CCT.
This is a general histopathology post. The appointee will contribute to undergraduate teaching and the training of Specialty Trainees. The department is adopting digital pathology for primary diagnostics; training in Whole Slide Imaging will be provided, and opportunities exist to help shape digital pathology services.
Key responsibilities include diagnostic reporting, participating in quality assurance, annual appraisal, and job planning. The role involves advising clinical teams on investigations and report interpretation, contributing to policy development, supervising junior staff, and supporting departmental operations.
The overarching goal is to provide the highest quality patient care through professional practice and continuous improvement.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to:
provide advice on the diagnosis, staging and prognosis of patients suffering from disease. Reporting and interpretation of specimen submitted to the department in line with RCPath guidelines.
take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes, where appropriate.
participate in the annual appraisal and job planning process.
work with relevant clinical teams in the provision of comprehensive Histopathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines. Answer phone calls to and from clinical colleagues, if required.
be jointly responsible for the supervision, training and management of any junior staff in the department.
be jointly responsible in the smooth and efficient running of the Histopathology department The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

- FRCPath or equivalent
- Full and specialist GMC registration with a licence to practice or within 6 months of CCT. Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the specialist register at the time of application.
